The following Open Letter was sent to the Argus regarding the Don't Attack Iran, Stop the Arms Trade Demo on June the 4th
As many Brightonians know, Smash EDO has been campaigning against EDO, the Moulsecomb factory building bomb release units, as used in Iraq, Palestine and across the world, for many years.
We want to invite Brightonians to our upcoming march against the threat of an attack on Iran on Monday June 4th. As the noise for an attack on Iran gets louder, readers may well remember that the invasion of Iraq was justified by "weapons of mass destruction" that turned out not to exist. In fact those lobbying for war against Iran are doing so to cement US control of resources and US political domination of the Middle-East. Much the same motives as for the attack on Iraq.
If Iran is attacked weapons components made-in-Brighton at the EDO factory will almost certainly be used.
We are hoping that many of you will decide it's worth spending your free afternoon on the bank holiday making it clear that you do not intend for this deadly farce to be repeated. This is an occasion for the whole family and the whole community to resist the threat of an attack on Iran.
Contrary to various allegations, this is nothing to do with the Jubilee. It is simply an afternoon when most people will be free and able to make their feelings felt.
We also have no desire to cause more disruption to the city than is absolutely necessary. For all these reasons, we would like to announce our intended march route to the people of Brighton. We will have a rally outside Barclays Bank from midday before walking up North Street, past Churchill Square and along Western Road/Church Road, before having a rally outside Hove Town Hall.
We are starting at Barclays because the bank is the largest global investor in the arms trade, as well as providing financial services to EDO MBM.
