Ask Pope Benedict: When Does Genocide Purify?

25-05-2007 10:21

Benedict's astounding comments attracted barely a flicker of media attention in the West -- almost all of it on the wire services, and some of it problematic in itself. A May 13 Reuters dispatch noted blithely that, contrary to Benedict's claims, "many Indian groups believe the conquest brought them enslavement and genocide." This is rather like writing that "many Jewish groups believe that the Nazi Holocaust brought Jews enslavement and genocide."

Protesters against Bulldozers

23-05-2007 20:58

Stone engraving from Tara. Tara is older than the pyramids and Stonehenge.
A small number of protesters are the only thing standing between thousands of years of ancient Irish and European heritage and the heavy-duty construction machinery that's trying to get rid of it.

National Monument Discovered at Tara in Path of M3 Motorway

23-05-2007 15:43

Featuring a press conference given by TaraWatch, the video (see link below) gives details of the M3 Motorway, what lies in its path, what has been destroyed, and what is being now being threatened with destruction.

A massive prehistoric ‘henge’ site has been discovered in Lismullen, beside the Hill of Tara on the route of the planned M3 Motorway. The circular enclosure is the size of more than three football fields, and is without doubt a national monument because of the rarity of henges in Ireland, as well as its importance to the Hill of Tara archaeological complex.

Islam In Western Mirror

21-05-2007 18:00

The anti-Islamic tradition in the Christendoms has a long historical pedigree and it continues to be a dynamic factor affecting and determining international relations.

The question of ‘Islamic terrorism’, the denial of women’s rights under Islam and the alleged irreconcilability of Islamic and Western values appear all the time in the Western media. But such accusations reveal a deep-rooted ignorance and confusion.

Empire as a Way of Life, Part 7

15-05-2007 10:11

Audio

The current imperial slaughter in the Middle East, justified by the "Global War on Terror", that has resulted in at least 600,000 deaths in Iraq, is nothing new — the U.S. Empire has a long and sordid history of genocidal mass murder.

The history of the US imperialism and Empire is the subject of a series of ten monthly seminars from Dr John Marciano, "Empire as a Way of Life". Attached is a recording of the third of these seminars and the text upon which it was based. The first 8 of these seminars have taken place and the intention is to have the whole series published on this site; the last 2 will take place between now and June.

This seminar, recorded on 20th March 2007 by the L.A. Sound Posse, runs for 44 minutes and includes the discussion following. It has been made available under a Creative Commons license. If this recording is broadcast please let the L.A. Sound Posse know. This recording was originally made available on the A-Infos Radio Project site.

The following text has been reproduced here with the kind permission of Dr John Marciano and he can be contacted at johnmarciano@mac.com. He introduced this series of seminars in the following way:

A fundamental purpose of our meetings is to understand the systemic nature of the U.S. Empire and the economic and military imperialism that is its lifeblood. The historian William Appleman Williams argues that empire became "a way of life" in the U.S., a "combination of patterns of thought and action that, as it becomes habitual and institutionalized, defines the thrust and character of a culture and society." This "way of life" has convinced many U.S. "Americans" they have a right or "manifest destiny" to impose their political and economic policies upon others.

Dr John Marciano is Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Cortland, where he taught courses on social and historical foundations of education and class, gender and race.

Blair's Legacy... and the "Struggle Against Violent Extremism"

14-05-2007 14:15

Finally. Blair’s going. But why now? And what has Blair left us behind?

There are many reasons one can guess as to why, but perhaps one of the biggest – yet least talked about – is the “cash for peerages” criminal investigation, which has been getting rather close to home, too close perhaps for Blair’s comfort.

"Bollocks 2 Blair" needs to be clearly defined... please help!

13-05-2007 18:12

I have been reading up on "bollocks" and have found a variety of meanings and usages.

Back in the day, around 1000 A.D., it gave reference to a small ball. Later on, in the 18th century, it referred to a priest and cuz priests talk such shite, it gave further reference to the shite that priests spoke - bollocks... and the meaning of the word continued to grow to testicles and beyond...
