Israeli general: Israel-Lebanon border could explode at any minute

Speaking at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in July, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman slammed Israel’s daily violations of Lebanese territorial sovereignty.

President Suleiman asked for the full and unconditional implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, for the preservation of Lebanon’s "right to defend itself and liberate its land by all legitimate and available means”.

31 July 2009 - On the occasion of the 65th anniversary, on August 2nd, of the liquidation of the so-called Gypsy camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau, where about 2,900 Sinti and Roma were murdered in one night, the Roma rights organisation Chachipe called on political leaders and civil society representatives to combat anti-Gypsyism.

Among the American nuclear arms in Europe are 200-350 air-launched B-61 bombs stored in air bases in Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands.

US nuclear weapons stored in Germany "can be mounted on German Tornado fighter planes" because "nuclear bombs stored at NATO bases are designed to be delivered by planes from the host country" and "German air force pilots headquartered in Buechel will be ordered to drop nuclear bombs in case of a military attack or war."

Once the first part of that objective had been achieved it was dropped as quickly as it had been concocted and wars could then be conducted for traditional reasons: Territorial designs, the acquisition of resources, control of vital transport routes including sea lanes, punishing recalcitrant adversaries, revenge. Ten years ago today and a global Carnival Against Capital was erupting across the world with co-ordinated protests taking place in over 40 countries on June 18th 1999.

Directly targeting financial centres the J18 day of International Action was stunning in its scale and ran alongside the G7/G8 meeting in Koln Germany. It followed the Global Street Party that had been held alongside the G7/G8 meeting in Birmingham in 1998 and co-ordinated through Reclaim The Streets.

To remember it, here's a set of 23 pictures from London J18 courtesy of a photographer who was there for the morning and the party, but who missed the ensuing riot as police fought to regain control of the City of London.

The reasons for struggle are greater now than then, and climate change and economic meltdowns threaten the lives and livelihoods of us all.
