14-11-2011 19:02

On September 11th 2001, whilst covering a Greek demonstration, photojournalist Yannis Behrakis experienced a live stun/flash grenade.

Police violence against against demonstrators and the general public has increased dramatically that it's hardly worth reporting.

The stun/flash grenade was launched directly at him, and follow similar attacks on other individuals.

Fortunately Behrakis was unharmed, although his clothes were burnt. Others have not been do fortunate, suffering burns, deafness and other injuries.

Occupy Cardiff 11.11.11. What happened?!

14-11-2011 13:19

11.11.11

Time for Occupy Cardiff to show solidarity with all the other Occupy movements across the globe. I got there a bit late so I missed the initial gathering at the Aneurin Bevan statue, but I soon noticed that they had set up camp outside the castle. Everyone was in good spirits, there was plenty of tents, and it was a buzzing hive of activity. There was a stock pile of donated food building up with more donations coming in at a steady pace, and a good community spirit at the heart of it.

One member of the public who was passing by struck up a conversation with me, saying how great it was that this is happening here now, and that he supports it 100%. Cars were honking their horns as they went past as well, which was good to hear, but the police presence was steadily growing in numbers which was a little irritating. They were getting more involved than was necessary for the situation. It seemed very odd because a similar protest camp had been set up on the same grounds earlier this year without any initial police interest whatsoever. The other Occupy camps all across the UK have all been relatively free from police interference too, so I was wondering what was going on.

N9: Pics of moment undercover cops arrest protester

11-11-2011 17:03

This is the moment several undercover police, dressed as protesters, drag a person from the crowd at the student demo on Nov 9. As is clear to see one cop is dragging the person by the throat while others hold his arms down. [All the coppers are earing blue wristabnds]. This is clearly not in any recognised legitimate police arrest manoeuvre and certainly isn’t sanctioned by the police authorities. Names of these officers as soon as possible please. Violent scum like this should not be on our streets.

After Nov 9: Where do we go from here?

11-11-2011 10:45

Front of Student March - rikkiindymedia[at]gmail.com
Were the Nov. 9th protests a game changer as we suggested they could be in a previous post? The answer is yes but certainly not in the way that we were hoping events would turn out! The hoped for meeting up of the sparks and students to unite as one protest was shafted by what can best be described as ‘total policing’ tactics from the Met aimed at intimidating and frustrating protesters every step of the way.

From the reports we’ve heard so far, the electrician’s action was pretty lively with roads being blocked for a while but the cops soon moved in with the result that the sparks ended up being kettled. You have to go back a long way to remember the last time plod took action against striking workers in this way. What is happening with the sparks action is having a resonance by word of mouth with other construction workers as doubtless they potentially face the shafting the electricians are confronting. We passed a few construction sites yesterday and the march was definitely getting the thumbs up from the builders watching us pass by. What is frustrating and quite scary is the almost total media blackout of the sparks dispute. The journalists are aware this dispute is going on but it’s hard to escape the suspicion that pressure is being applied from high up to keep this story under wraps.

Undercover Cop Faces at N9

10-11-2011 18:34

This footage proves secret police ARE dressing in black-bloc gear and hoodies etc to attack and arrest protestors. Print-put spotter sheets with their faces on and if you see them at future demos keep shouting out to everyone who they are, follow them like a hawk, and film their every move.

Cops Hide ID Numbers at N9 Demo

09-11-2011 20:23

During today's Nov 9 protest by electricians, students and taxi drivers in central London, at least 2 mounted cops hid ID numbers by pulling metal numerals off their shoulders or by wearing yellow hi-vis webbing over their epaulettes to cover-up the numbers on their epaulettes -

Black Bloc: the culture of coercion and poor strategy at mass actions needs an overhaul

08-11-2011 09:14

As someone who has often defended black bloc tactics since I first encountered it at the Seattle WTO in 1999, I find myself searching for a greater critique, discussion and engagement around strategy and what really is the best approach to contributing to an effective movement that brings significant social, economic, and environmental change to this world. I have come to the conclusion that the typical narrative of the black bloc that has prevailed at mass actions in the U.S. has proven to be counter productive.

Protest chic – a guide on what to wear and bring on N9 demonstration

06-11-2011 14:39

Many anarchists, especially those on the internet, are concerned about what to wear for the N9 anarchist bloc. Most internet anarchists see protests as a fashion challenge and can spend days debating what they should or shoudn’t wear before deciding not to go to a demonstration anyway. To make things easier N9 have drawn up a catwalk list of essential items all anarchists, indeed all protesters, should consider when preparing for a demonstration.

Kingston Crown Court Sentences, Nov 4th Report

06-11-2011 10:44

Friday 4th November saw eleven protesters in Kingston Crown Court for sentencing relating to the Millbank protest of November last year, the Whitehall protest, the final anti-fees protest and from the TUC protest of March this year. Of those that received custodial sentences – all for violent disorder – the length of sentence ranged from 10 months to 18 months, with the majority 12 months or over. When sentencing, the two judges – in the morning Nicholas Price QC and the afternoon Susan Tipping QC – made it clear that even where it was clear that what the protesters had supposedly done was not very serious, the context of the public order situation, combined with the desire to deter and warn future protesters was what was really at stake in the severity of the charges and sentencing.
