Why do activists continue to make use of MySpace? - Calling for a new online social network

15-02-2007 14:42

social networking

After some recent discussion on whether a local critical mass group should set up an account on the social networking site MySpace, some interesting things came to light. The amount of activist and campaign groups using the social networking site is growing. These groups include not only critical mass groups in London, Oxford and Manchester and anarchists from Norwich, Gwent, Ipswich but also bigger initiatives like Earth First (1) | (2), Plane Stupid, the Anarchist Federation (1) | (2) and the Cowley Club in Brighton. Even within the independent media world Democray Now, the Indypendent (1) | (2), and Indymedia (1) | (2) collectives from San Diego, Los Angelos (1) | (2) and Indybay have joined the MySpace craze. All but to name a few really. But is MySpace really the online community I would want to be part of? Looking into its structure and the real reasons behind its existance, I doubt I would.

Mobile Phones Are Bugs

12-02-2007 12:59

this is old news but the debate continues

For those who still don't believe it is possible to be bugged even when you are not using your mobile phone there is plenting of info showing this is the case going back several years.

one such article reprinted here from FT.

" more significantly they can also remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call, giving security services the perfect bugging device. "We have inadvertently started carrying our own trackable ID card in the form of the mobile phone," said Sandra Bell, head of the homeland security department at the Royal United Services Institute."

The difference between piracy and theft

04-02-2007 15:58

CDs always only cost a few pence to produce, but until file-sharing became wide-spread they were always sold for £15 in the UK, $10 in the US. That hefty mark-up was the same for Sony BMG CDs, for EMI CDs, for Vivendi Universal CDs and for Warner Music CDs. No legal charges against this monopolistic, exploitative, price-fixing cartel were ever brought because governments protect business not citizens.

Paedo-police video every UK child naked

The Suns front page 'scoop' today is 'State X-Ray Spies To See You Nude (you are undie surveillance)' but I prefer my headline as for once the Sun understate the issue. The article is giving the great-unwashed notice what has been decided long ago and has already been trialled without the public being informed.

America's Germ Warfare Capabilities developed in secret in US Corporate Labs

07-01-2007 15:07

The costliest, most grandiose research scheme ever attempted having germ warfare capability is going forward under President Bush and in apparent defiance of international treaties such as the Geneva Convention of 1925 that bans biological agents.

And this program, involving some of the world's deadliest and most loathsome pathogens, many of which could trigger plagues and epidemics, is being conducted largely in secret without adequate oversight and in flagrant contempt of NIH's own rules.

The Guardian today published a report on a new government plan to introduce x-ray and dental checks for young asylum seekers entering the UK to assess their age. The article says the plan is seen by "an array of medical specialists and children's campaigners" as "unethical and ineffective", but does not say how racist this new neo-Labour invention is.
