Social networking sites such as Facebook pose an inherent risk to activists, hackers, campaigners, etc. due to the fact that Facebook demands and stores large quantities of your own personal data which is freely available to the government, the police and anyone else who might have an interest in tracking activists online.

With Facebook's clamp down on fake profiles, their demands for phone numbers during registration, and so on, the time has come for activists to look further afield and use more clandestine means of communication for their publishing and planning activities.

A new study by the Mediterranean Council for Intelligence Studies’ (MCIS) 2012 Intelligence Studies Yearbook points to the use of social media as “the new cutting edge in open-source tactical intelligence collection”. IntelNews.org’s Joseph Fitsanakis, who co-authored the study, reports:

We explain that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and a host of other social networking platforms are increasingly viewed by intelligence agencies as invaluable channels of information acquisition. We base our findings on three recent case studies, which we believe highlight the intelligence function of social networking. ISSE opposes extradition of UK student Richard O’Dwyer

On February 7, the International Students for Social Equality held a meeting on campus to oppose the deportation to the United States of Sheffield Hallam University student Richard O’Dwyer.

O’Dwyer is facing a maximum 10 years in prison on charges of copyright infringement. The meeting was addressed by Julie Hyland, assistant national secretary of the Socialist Equality Party and attended by a number of students and lecturers.

A second meeting will be held Tuesday, February 21, at 5:30 p.m., to continue the campaign in O’Dwyer’s defence.
