It's starting to look like someone has cracked the system used to protect commercial movies distributed on the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc high-definition-disc formats!

A thread on the Doom9 forums details the astonishingly speedy development process of the beta version of the cracking tool for the AACS (Advanced Access Content System).

The thread even includes links that let you download the Java-based command-line tool for Windows in a miniscule (18KByte) Zip file.

UK ID cards U-turn

The UK government has revised its plans for a national compulsory biometric identity card. The original proposal was for a new 'clean' central database to hold all personal information - name, date of birth, NI number, address, biometric data (iris scans, fingerprints, DNA) as well as your immigration status, medical and criminal records. And everything else too.

Privacy, Email and Activism - a brief intro

Recently there was a conference for activists interested in security issues - obviously something that any activist should be interested in. Notes from the gathering are being compiled along with previous documents into a printed booklet for activists which is expected to be distributed next year.
In the meantime I've been doing a little additional research on solutions specific to securing email communication...
