Numbers thin on ground in Calais, please come if you can

12-08-2009 09:56 | Anti-racism | Migration | Repression | South Coast | World

In the last couple of days numbers of people monitoring and intervening against police attacks on migrants have reduced. If you are thinking of coming, or want to find out more, please contact us now or have a look at the blog to see what you can do in Calais. There are many roles, doesn't have to involve face-to-face with cops! Hanging out with migrants often reaps rewards in building relationships, finding out what is really going on and is appreciated as simple, but effective, help can be provided - sorting out lighting for squats, improving nutrition for a pregnant woman, working in the same internet cafe so police back off, basic medic work...

Policing with "dignity" in Calais

Calais Palestinian 'jungle'
As Immigration Minister Besson announced last night that he would provide free showers to migrants (four of them for 120-1800 people) as a measure to treat the scabies epidemic (showers do not treat scabies, which he knows being a former doctor) and demanding that the local authority support this work for "as long as it takes" (the same local authority that in July refused to allow humanitarian associations to set up showers), this photo show the reality of the "dignified" treatment of migrants in Calais that Besson has been infamously quoted as saying.

Honduras Coup: Template for a Hemispheric Assault on Democracy

11-08-2009 07:39 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Repression | World

"Honduras resists!"
As Eva Golinger has convincingly documented1, the United States took part in conceiving, planning, and staging the coup. The U.S. ambassador in Tegucigalpa, Hugo Llorens, coordinates a team of high-ranking U.S. and Honduran military officials, and creatures from the old Bush administration, using the Soto Cano (Palmerola) U.S. air force base.

But when the army, machine guns blazing, assaulted President Zelaya’s house, kidnapped him, and dumped him in Costa Rica – still in pajamas – their actions forged unprecedented unity in Latin America and the Caribbean against the coup regime, and enraged hundreds of thousands within the country.

Street Protests in the 8 Weeks
By calling the situation a “family fight” Mousavi who is the loser in the Khamenei-Ahmadinrjad game, is trying to at least bring it back to its pre elections status. What he doesn’t understand is that especially after June 20th Khamenei himself has become people’s main target and hence there is no turn back.

The Wall Street Journal Walls Itself In and Ridiculously Defends the Dictatorshi

10-08-2009 14:07 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | World

"The coup d'état that rocked Honduras in late June and removed democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya from office, sending him into exile in Costa Rica, was preceded by a multi-million dollar build-up of foreign aid from a U.S. agency that includes on its board of directors the president of the International Republican Institute as well as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
That taxpayer-funded agency, called the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), oversees a multi-billion dollar foreign-aid fund called the Millennium Challenge Account. It was established in 2004 under the Bush administration as means of combating terrorism by funding development in poor nations under a strict neo-conservative free-trade model."

This felt like a real practical prevention of police attempts to hassle, arrest and quite clearly attack migrants in broad daylight in the centre of Calais in front of tourists and Calaisiens. This was made possible by our numbers increasing only slightly today, so come to Calais and continue the work to support migrants here. Honduras Coup Dictator Micheletti Calls Out the Geezer Patrol or "a country for

09-08-2009 18:58 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Workers' Movements | World

"The pro-coup dailies in Honduras are abuzz with EXCELLENT NEWS FOR THE COUP REGIME!
Faced with the reality that millions of Hondurans have done the math and figured out that 14,000 National Police plus 9,000 members of the Armed Forces do not equal enough force to squash their unarmed movement to topple the coup d’etat, coup “president” Roberto Micheletti has called in the reserves.
The pro-coup daily La Tribuna gushes that the cavalry has come to save the coup regime from the forward march of the Honduran people:
More than 2,000 reservists, veterans of war and retired officials of the Armed Forces (FFAA, in its Spanish initials) reiterated their support for the President, Roberto Micheletti, at the celebration of the National Day of the Reservist."
