Breaking news from Israel

14-03-2006 16:03 | Anti-militarism | Repression | World

British and US prison wardens, who were meant to be guarding and protecting prisoners including Ahmed Saadat, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, have withdrawn to allow the Israeli army to storm the prison. The British government must be urgently contacted to press them to re-enter the prison and protect those inside. Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the raid and said the US and UK warders were responsible for the prisoners' safety. Reports are that already one prison policeman has been killed and 18 wounded. According to the BBC, ‘50 jeeps and three tanks pushed into the oasis town in the Jordan valley, as two helicopters hovered overhead. The army later brought a large armoured bulldozer to the prison, which proceeded to demolish walls.’

José Angel Altzuguren, alias Kotto, aged 39, from Bera (Navarre), was found dead in his prison cell in Soria (Castille), three days after his transfer there from Iruñea (Pamplona) prison. According to prison authorities, Kotto used the sheets from his bed to hang himself. The political prisoner was under medical treatment for depression, despite which he had been moved into an isolation cell in the Spanish prison. The Basque pro-amnesty movement called it an 'induced suicide'.

Sorbonne University Eviction Video + Pics and more background to CPE resistance (france)

13-03-2006 13:30 | French CPE uprising 2006 | Education | Repression | Workers' Movements | World

pics from http://www.phototheque.org/174.html?page=1
For the last week protests, occupations and direct action against the CPE in France has been increasing. Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in hundreds of demonstrations. Railways have been blockaded, airports disrupted, and around half of France's universities have seen occupations. Clashes with police have occured throughout the country.

Much international publicity has come from the occupation and violent eviction of the Sorbonne university in Paris (video below). With the media making the obvious 1968 comparisons, riot police stormed the university building firing tear gas at around 4am on Saturday after hours of resistance from the occupiers and their supporters outside. There were around 30 arrests. The university had been occupied since Tuesday night with tensions increasing. On Friday police batton charged students who were blocking a road near to the university.

unexploded munitions, radiation, and toxic substances
Withdrawing Support For Militarism [179]
The problem with revenge is that it lowers the humanity of those who exercise it down to the same level, of even below, those who committed the original crime. Although we can't yet know who was responsible for 911 or 1012, we do now know that forces of the Coalition of the Willing (CoW) have, on occasions, been just as barbaric as the people who killed on those dates. This has been amply demonstrated in Afghanistan and again in Iraq. If you doubt this, seek out more facts about the CoW's use of DU and NDU weaponry and cluster bombs. These horror weapons continue, to this day, to put young children and adult civilians at risk of injury or death from unexploded munitions, radiation, and toxic substances in the ground water and the food chain.

Unfascist Radical Reprogramming Programme Proposed

09-03-2006 00:32 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Repression | World

Deprogramming and Reprogramming
Appearing on the Government television network the Australian Broadcasting Corporation tonight, Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty has proposed a programme for the deprogramming and reprogramming of political radicals, particularly (and at first) where those dangerous idealists pose some manner of immediate threat to the Australian State. Following models now in place in the United States and Indonesia, Keelty suggested compulsory reprogramming programmes could reduce the risk to Australian interests from militants, dissidents, and ideologues.

Surveillance

09-03-2006 00:29 | Analysis | Repression | Social Struggles | World

Watching The Watchers Watch YOU
It is up to ordinary people to raise the level of debate about the undemocratic surveillance practices of the many faceless and unaccountable agents who make daily intrusions on individual privacy, and about the apologists and propagandists for the War nn Terror who applaud every new attack on human rights and freedoms as "prudent" or "necessary". If there is no discussion of reverse surveillance in the national media, create it on the streets on a citizen to citizen basis. If nobody is talking about the outrageous assaults on privacy and human rights embodied in the new antiterrorist acts forced through US, UK and Australian legislatures, start talking about it to your neighbours and friends.

U.S. repression of journalists

08-03-2006 13:02 | Repression | World

Bush and his ultra-right honchos are really pissed this time – in their efforts to track down a US loyalist, who spilt the beans on domestic spying, the Bush gestapo are now targeting journos and the free press. All the ‘security’ agencies at this megalomaniac’s disposal have been commandeered for the task. This attack on the free press is yet another devastating blow directed at the already battered body of American democracy and liberty. America, the home of the brave and the land of the free, has been relegated to the historical record. This new land is an abominable aberration of the original.

Briefing on the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill - Get Clued Up Now!!

08-03-2006 08:15 | Repression | Social Struggles | World

Boring bill title, but a massive change to the so-called democracy in this country. The Bill would allow the government to introduce, amend, or replace any legislation it likes, on the say so of a single government minister. Things like creating new offences punishable by up to 2yrs imprisonment, abolising local government, introducing house arrest, and giving the police greater powers of arrest and interrogation. It could also be used to set up new courts, and in effect re-write the rules on immigration, nationality, divorce, inheritance and the appointment of judges – all without any parliamentary scrutiny...

Autonomous Village Under Siege by Korean Troops

07-03-2006 18:46 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | World

Pyeongtaek, South Korea - On March 6th, 2006, South Korean military riot police began an attack on the autonomous village of Daechuri. For over four years, Daechuri and the nearby community of Doduri have defiantly resisted the siezure of their homes and fields for the expansion of an United States Army base. Barracaded inside the elementary school, rice farmers, elderly residents, and peace activists are holding out against sporadic, sometimes intense attacks by Korea's elite military police force. International support is needed to pressure the Korean government to halt its brutal assault.
