The EU council yesterday voted to implement software patents in Europe. When they are implemented it may mean it's possible to patent any process (techies call this an algorithim). So we could have IBM 'owning' the "2+2" bit of 2+2=4!Media Hacklab benefit tomorrow night

There will be a benefit night at the ex-Grand Banks Social Centre, Saturday the 15th of May at 8pm. There will be food, a cafe, a juice bar, DJs and live music. Suggested donation at door: £2 waged, £1 unwaged. There will be another PC building workshopat 5pm, before the main event. If you've ever wanted to learn how to build your own PC from scratch (either from new parts, saving yourself money or from reused parts, saving even more money!) then this is the place to learn. No experience required! You can even bring your own parts and we will help you to get your PC working. There will also be other stuff happening like the selling of cheap GNU/Linux CDs.

The EU Council of Ministers is demonstrating that the concept of democracy is alien to the EU. This Wednesday, the Irish Presidency managed to secure a qualified majority for a counter-proposal to the software patents directive, with only a few countries - including Belgium and Germany - showing resistance. The new text proposes to discard all the amendments from the European which would limite patentability. Instead the lax language of the original Commission proposal is to be reinstated in its entirety, with direct patentability of computer programs, data structures and process descriptions added as icing on the cake. The proposal is now scheduled to be confirmed without discussion at a meeting of ministers on 17-18 May, unless one of the Member States changes its vote. In a remarkable sign of unity in times of imminent elections, members of the European Parliament from all groups across the political spectrum are condemning this blatant disrespect for democracy in Europe.Say no to ID cards! - submit objections to public consultation by 20th July

An open meeting for the Media Hacklab is taking place this Sunday the 9th of May at Freedom Press Bookshop, Whitechapel. Sunday's meeting will be more about the long term direction of the Hacklab, such as how we prefer to fund it and our attitude towards non-free/proprietory software in the lab. All are welcome to attend.
