Media Hacklab open meeting this Sunday

asa | 05.05.2004 14:05 | Free Spaces | Technology | London

An open meeting for the Media Hacklab is taking place this Sunday the 9th of May at Freedom Press Bookshop, Whitechapel. Sunday's meeting will be more about the long term direction of the Hacklab, such as how we prefer to fund it and our attitude towards non-free/proprietory software in the lab. All are welcome to attend.

Freedom Press Bookshop address: Angel Alley, 84b Whitechapel High Street, London E1 7QX. The alley is next to the KFC near Aldgate East tube, Whitechapel Art Gallery exit.

We are preparing for this meeting by collaboratively creating an agenda using our wiki. Please add any points you'd like to raise at the meeting:

There will also be a benefit night at the ex-Grand Banks Social Centre, Saturday the 15th of March at 8pm. There will be food, a cafe, a juice bar, DJs and live music. Suggested donation at door: £2 waged, £1 unwaged. There will be another PC building workshop at 5pm, before the main event. If you've ever wanted to learn how to build your own PC from scratch (either from new parts, saving yourself money or from reused parts, saving even more money!) then this is the place to learn. No experience required! You can even bring your own parts and we will help you to get your PC working. There will also be other possible stuff happening like the selling of cheap GNU/Linux CDs and a workshop on the politics of Linux vs.
Windows.

Social centre address: Grand Banks, 156-158 Fortess Road, Tufnell Park, NW5 - just opposite Tufnell Park tube. Bus: 4, 134 or 210.  http://www.wombles.org.uk

About the Hacklab

A new Media Hacklab is getting started in the east end of London. Based at the Freedom Press bookshop and social centre, it will be an open access computer lab with internet access. Going beyond the preponderance of internet cafes, a Hacklab is a political space used for alternative media, the use and development of free software and other emancipatory technologies, skill sharing and collective learning, community projects and anything else we can organise. The projects that happen there will depend on the commitment of those involved.
