Campaigners remain defiant after Manchester airport protest sentencing For many of the defendants, this was their first introduction to the judicial system. One of the defendants, speaking after court stated that 'having just experienced the highly flawed and outdated justice system for the first time, there has never been a more urgent need for people to utillise civil disobedience as a tactic for campaigning.'

Gaddafi out! Protest on streets of Bradford
imc-northern-contact@lists.indymedia.org (jimdog) , 21-02-2011 - 21:24
A large group of protestors have gathered outside the Alhambra theatre in Bradford to protest against the murder of hundreds of anti-government activists in Libya and to call for the removal from power of the countrys dictator Muammer al-Gaddafi. At the time of writing, around 50 bradford residents had already gathered and their numbers were continuing to grow. The protest in Bradford has assembled as Gaddafi's security forces continue their brutal crackdown on the people of Libya, who are calling for freedom from a dictatorship that has perservered in the country since 1969. The uprising began on the 13th January 2011 and is continuing. The latest reports put the death toll at a minimum of 300 people, with the latest confirmed death being that of an 18 month old boy. Gaddafi's son has vowed to "fight to the last bullet", but this has not deterred the mounting numbers of people taking to the streets daily or their determination for the people to take the country back.

Angry scenes as officers eject protestors
anon@indymedia.org (Dee) , 18-02-2011 - 22:23
* You are here * News Angry scenes as officers eject protestors from meeting Sponsored by Kirkham Grammar Published on Fri Feb 18 14:42:43 GMT 2011
Police ejected protestors from County Hall as politicians voted through £179 million cuts at an extraordinary budget meeting. The tense meeting had to be halted twice, once when police were called to clear the public gallery and, again, when a fire alarm was activated an hour later, sparking a mass evacuation of the staff, councillors and members of the public. It was the first time in 20 years that the gallery had been cleared. During the meeting, Conservative county council leader Geoff Driver was involved in a spat with anti-cuts protestors, who he later branded "unruly louts." The decision means that thousands of jobs will now be axed from the authority and many services scaled back over the next three-years. One of the most controversial proposals voted through is the move to shut at least one respite centre for the families of disabled children within the next 12 months, sparking an angry response from the scores of angry protestors who gathered at the meeting. Before the start of yesterday's meeting dozens of parents affected by the proposals made their feelings clear by staging a protest outside. Some told how important the county's eight respite centres were to them. After the meeting Manoj Majhi, 47, whose 14-year-old disabled daughter Amy attends Maplewood House respite centre in Bamber Bridge, which is one of the centres facing the axe, said: "I am totally deflated. "I came here to see democracy in action and what I got was a sham. They didn't care one iota what we had to say or how these cuts will affect our families. The county council budget was approved 42 votes to 23 after more than four hours.

Halifax - Northern Towns Rally Against the Cuts
anon@indymedia.org (protag) , 10-02-2011 - 23:23
This Saturday 12th February there’s a ‘Northern Towns Rally Against the Cuts’ demo in Halifax called by Calderdale Joint Trades Unions. It starts at 10.30am at Halifax Town Hall car park with a march from there to the Piece Hall – for the usual speeches no doubt, telling us just how bad the cuts are. While it’s good that something is happening and everyone who opposes the cuts should indeed try to get along to such events, it’s important to point out that marching from A to B just isn’t going to cut it. If there really is “a mood of anger and defiance sweeping the country” as Calderdale Save Our Services claim in their leaflet for the Rally, then we need to see some of it in Calderdale, going beyond rallies, lobbies and marches to direct action, disruption and economic blockades. Now read on...

Manchester Airport on Trial
manchesterairportontrial[at]gmail.com (Manchester Climate Action) , 08-02-2011 - 15:22
Manchester Airport on Trial – case 2 begins Monday 21st February 2011 Show of support outside court: Meet at 9am outsideTraffford Magistrates' Court, Ashton Lane, Sale, M33 7NR In May 2010, seventeen people took direct action at Manchester Airport, temporarily shutting it down. They did this to stop some of the 5 million tonnes of carbon emissions that the airport is responsible for annually and in opposition to plans to destroy family homes and biodiversity spots to expand the World Freight Centre. The 'Manchester Airport on Trial' campaign is being run to support the activists during their court case and to continue to oppose the airport's plans to become the 'Heathrow of the North' by 2050. Six defendants are pleading not guilty to the charge of aggravated trespass. They will argue that their actions were necessary to prevent emissions and will call expert witnesses to examine the impacts of aviation and climate change both locally and in terms of public health. The defendants will state that their actions were further justified given the failings and corruption of the decision-making processes at a Parliamentary and local authority level.
