Revolts and riots in migrant detention centres (Italy)
italy calling , 06-03-2011 - 23:01
1 March: after a revolt that has gone on for days, the detention centre in Gradisca is in a state of collapse: one single cell left for the 100 detainees, people eating and sleeping in the corridors and in the canteen, one bathroom for everyone. You can see some pictures here. The detainees’ revolt almost completely destroyed the building, but the detainees couldn’t be transferred, as the other detention centres were packed full. Revolts and riots are not new to this detention centre; things have been worsening over the last couple of years. In September 2009, a similar revolt was brutally repressed by the police.

Being treated as a criminal as first sight !!
Nadhir , 03-03-2011 - 21:54
I was held at the UK Border in Heathrow airport. I was interviewed as to my intention to visit Liverpool. I was to be present at the birth of my second child with my partner and mother of our 1st daughter. They did not believe me. I was denied entry. The Officer that interviewed me thought that Liverpool was a shithole of a city and didn't like it. Perhaps that was the reason I was denied entry. I do have an appeal pending of an unmarried partner application as well.

New business opportunities: Deportation hostels
Corporate Watch , 11-02-2011 - 16:49
In May 2010, the new coalition government committed to ending child detention for immigration purposes. The 'commitment' had to wait another few months to materialise (only last week reports revealed that a 11-year-old girl had been detained at Tinsley House detention centre, near Gatwick, over Christmas). Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg went as far as claiming that this marked "an enormous culture shift within our immigration system." But while many serious concerns regarding the rights and welfare of migrant families remain, the new system appears to have created a new market for detention and deportation profiteers.
