Bristol Indymedia:This Land Is Our Land – Presented By The Warren James Group
Hands off our forest , 02-04-2011 - 18:22
Monday 4th April, 8pm Cube Microplex, Dove St, £4/3/no one turned away through lack of funds We have just seen a massive U turn by this government as a result of huge ground swell of public opinion against the proposed sell off of the Forestry Commission Estate. In the autumn of 2010, the campaign kicked off in the Forest of Dean with a huge public meeting in Cinderford which was attended by over 500 people and a rally in Speech House attended by 3000 people.
Tory MP Mark Harper was invited to speak at both these events to present his case, but refused. A number of organisations have been working together, uniting people from all political persuasions and utilizing a raft of different protest techniques. Right across the country communities have been organising to resist the sell off of their woodlands and have started to come together and to act in solidarity.
In the Forest, Harper recently gave only 24 hours notice to speak at a small venue in Coleford to introduce the consultation process and to present his proposals to give part of the Forest to a charity and sell the rest off. The meeting was packed inside and out, where about 300 demonstrators chanted slogans all night such as Hands off our Forest and Tunis – Egypt- Forest of Dean. Inside he was ridiculed by speeches from children to old age pensioners. He refused to speak to the people outside which caused great outrage and not surprisingly people were very angry when he tried to sneak out the back with full police protection.
In the Telegraph, Harper accused the Foresters of behaving like a “baying mob.” Other papers have described the U turn as a victory by middle England and the Tory Shires. This meeting will look the reality of these events and the politics of how a whole community united around a single issue and won. The night includes speakers from the Warren James group and short films of the protests and actions.

Unique mentoring initiative for young males to launch in Bristol area
Fen Bagias , 29-03-2011 - 12:22
New charity Journeyman UK is inviting boys and young males aged 13-17 in the Bristol area to get involved with a life-changing mentoring initiative, combining regular ‘rite of passage’ adventure weekends with an ongoing network of male support and guidance.
On the weekend of 15/16/17 April 2011, fifteen boys and young males from across the region will take part in a transformative adventure weekend. The experience will not only teach them new skills, but also allow them to grow in confidence, make new friends and benefit from the support of a group of skilled and experienced male mentors.
However the journey will not end after the weekend – on the contrary, it’s just the beginning. Those who attend will continue to be supported by Journeyman UK’s mentors and their peers via regular group meet ups and on other rite of passage weekends.
Beyond that, graduates of the Journeyman UK experience will be invited to become the staff and mentors of future weekends – and join a nationwide community of Journeymen UK mentors. This community aims to provide the opportunity, every step of the way, for boys and young males to develop and display the qualities they see modelled by their mentors - qualities that include emotional intelligence and resilience, self-belief, empathy, responsibility and accountability.
Paul Howell, Executive Director of Journeyman UK, says: ‘Evidence shows that boys from all backgrounds readily engage with communities of positive male role models. They respond to the structure and acceptance they find, and to the challenge of embracing healthy male behaviours. Our vision is to create safe and powerful spaces where boys and young males can discover who they are as individuals and acknowledge their place within a community that needs and values them.’
Journeyman UK is following in the footsteps of the acclaimed US charity Boys to Men, which supports boys and young males as they navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood, especially those who do not have positive male role models in their lives to help guide them. The founder of Boys to Men, Joe Sigurdson, will be travelling from San Diego to the UK especially to attend the April event.
There are a limited number of places remaining on the weekend in April, so please get in touch as soon as possible for further information. The cost for the whole weekend and the ongoing mentoring is £350 but subsidised places are available to families on a low income.
Contact Paul Howell on 07746 946996, email connect@journeymanuk.org or visit our website, www.journeymanuk.org

Notes to Editors
For further information, please contact Paul Howell, Executive Director of Journeyman UK on 07746 946996 / paul.howell@journeymanuk.org or Fen Bagias on 07976 252002 / fen.bagias@journeymanuk.org
Journeyman UK is a new registered charity that is deeply rooted in the community and exists to support and mentor boys aged 13 to 17 as they make the transition from adolescence to manhood.
The Journeyman UK rite of passage weekends incorporate physical and emotional tests, to enable the boys and young males to discover inner resources that they didn’t know existed, gain new self-respect and confidence. The tests are challenging, but do not involve winning and losing, which can create shame.
The ongoing mentoring will enable the boys and young males to find their own answers to the challenges they face in their lives, in a creative and authentic manner. Group mentoring will take place every two weeks, for between six - twelve months. Topics relevant to the particular group will be discussed, for example issues related to peer pressure, self-esteem and self respect, drugs, family situations, gender topics and communication.
All Journeyman UK mentors have been trained and vetted and hold an enhanced level Criminal Record Bureau check issued no less than 18 months prior.

100,000+ To Protest Against Cuts, University Staff Strike Over Cuts: Follow The Story On Indymedia!
Jamie Skey , 24-03-2011 - 21:22
100,000 plus to protest against public spending cuts Protest the Cuts! Bristol Indymedia will be helping to cover this event and posting content back to here, so if you're on the march and from the SW - please post to the site and share your news! This Saturday 100,000 plus union members and campaigners - including many from Bristol - are set to march against the government's cuts in public spending, jobs, services and pensions. From Bristol, the Anti Cuts Alliance, the NUJ, students, as well as other local factions will be strongly represented. The protest is predicted to be the biggest in over 20 years. Almost 650 coaches have been hired from towns and cities across the UK as well as 10 chartered trains from areas including Scotland and the north-west of England.
For protestors, the march wil be a chance to demonstrate unity and opposition against unfair and unneccesary spending cuts, while backing the alternatives of a Robin Hood tax on bankers, closures of tax loopholes, and investment in jobs and green growth. Protestors plan to march from Victoria Embankment to a rally in Hyde Park.
A survey by Unison and the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union showed that a third of public-sector workers had personal debts of £10,000 or more, revealing the "shocking impact" of the Government's cuts and pay freeze. ... Full Article. Update! Today (Thursday 24th March) Bristol University staff were on strike as part of a national day of industrial action against plans for compulsory redundancies and proposals over pay. While Tuesday's strike was over proposed changes to pensions, today's action was over the looming threat of compulsory redundancies for staff and the offer of a 0.5% pay increase this year, following a 0.4% increase last year and a pay freeze the following two years. With inflation currently running at 5.5% the prospect of a less than 1% pay increase over four years equates to a large scale real terms cut in pay for university staff. Full Article. UWE students campaign for a Palestinian student to study at UWE
Joe Odell , 24-03-2011 - 17:22
Students at the University of the West of England are campaigning to bring a Palestinian student, currently suffering at the hands of Israels crippling blockade of The Gaza Strip, to come and study at the UWE. In January of 2009 a group of around 30 students staged an occupation in the University of the West of England in protest against Israel’s deadly "operation cast led" attack on the Gaza strip, which claimed over 1400 lives and left many others injured, homeless and malnourished. The students occupied the space for 3 nights and presented the university with a list of demands, the most significant of which was that the university provide fully paid scholarships for Palestinian students in Gaza to study at the University of the West of England. Two years on, the University has agreed to fund one fully paid scholarship at the cost of around £45,000 a year. However this is on the condition that the donors raise the first £5,000 pounds . Once this has been achieved, the university will fund a fully paid scholarship for a Palestinian currently living in the Gaza strip. This will profoundly change the life of someone currently suffering at the hands of Israel’s crippling blockade of Gaza.
Students at UWE are now in the process of raising £5,000. They aim is to raise the money by June this year, this would allow a prospective student from Gaza to start studying as early as September 2011. In order to raise this money the students have decided they need to look outside the university for private donors. So far the students have managed to raise £2,336, with Viva Palestina donating £2,000 towards the cause.
“We aspire to champion the real people behind the politics who are in intolerable situations and experiencing unimaginable suffering. The Conflict Zone Bursary fund has been set up in order to offer these people a way out. We hope the project will run annually to create lasting legacy, offering scholarships to students from war torn countries.” – Yazan Abu-Jbara, UWE student and member of the Conflict Zone Bursary team.
Official Statement from UWE:
The conflict zone bursary fund has been set up in order to offer the real people behind the politics, who are in intolerable situations and experiencing unimaginable suffering, a way out. This charitable project aims to bring the students and the university together in a joint effort to raise money in order to make this wonderful idea become a reality.
As the Bursary Fund was set up in response to student support for the people of the Gaza strip, the first scholarship will be directed toward a student from that area.
The University of the West of England has agreed to provide a comprehensive scholarship for a student to come and study at UWE starting in September 2011. The total cost for this scholarship is estimated to be £45,000 which includes fees, maintenance, flights, orientation, and other expenses. However, we the donors, have to come up with the first £5,000. Therefore, we urge you to donate generously towards this noble humanitarian cause in order to profoundly transform an individual’s life.
To donate, find out more or track progress of the student campaign, visit the campaign website, through the link provided or alternatively, email Joe Odell at odell88@hotmail.com
