Worldwide Anti-War Protests: March 18th Reports
Saturday 18th March was an International Day of Mobilisation against the war and occupation in Iraq, marking the three year anniversary of the war (see call from WSF Assembly of the Movements). Over the weekend of the 18th hundreds of demonstrations took place throughout the world demanding to end to the occupation of Iraq, and protesting against a possible attack on Iran. In London, the Stop The War coalition said 80 - 100,000 people marched through the streets, however as usual there was disagreement over numbers with the police saying the turnout was as low as 15,000 (a figure which was then printed in mainstream media across the world). Locally protests also took place in Glasgow, Newcastle and Dublin. In the US tens of thousands took part in protests across the country (500 demonstrations were scheduled). In Germany the demands were often broadened to include protests against repression and or the liberty of political prisoners. In the Arab world, demonstrations took place in Basra and the Syrian capital Damascus. Smaller ones took place in Beirut, Cairo and other Arab cities. In the Tunisian city of Sfax, police stormed into a crowd of about 3,000 people and beat them with batons and truncheons, injuring at least 20. That it should come to this … fear and loathing on the swp march
should’ve known, I really should. I mean when it comes to cynical, piss taking of this merry band of useless marching muppets I’m the worst offender… but somehow, well the glorious events taking place in France, the line of mounted riot cops I saw leaving Islington nick on my way there, well it got my blood running, got my hopes up that this day would be more than the usual impotent trot through London, that perhaps, just perhaps this would be the day that something might happen.

Early reports from Anti-war Demos 18th March - London
Disappointingly throughout this afternoon the BBC has been reporting only 12,000 people on the London anti-war demo. However folks on the scene say the turn out is MUCH bigger than that, maybe reaching towards 100,000.

It's a bit late but I finally managed to upload my pics and thought these were worth sharing, especially as Camera Boy's camera (see ealrier post) broke packed up halfway through.

Pictures from Saturday, March 18th 2006, the big Stop The War demonstration, which marked the third anniversary of the second Iraq War, and was also part of a global day of protest, including anti war demos in Iraq itself.
On the day after half a million people attended the St. Patricks Day parade, a couple of thousand more took to the streets of Dublin as part of a global day of protest against George W. Bush and the U.S. ruling elite’s campaign of world dominance and terror.

Sadly the IMC helicopter is still out of action so an accurate estimate of the numbers is tricky. The Police working as always to a government agenda said 15,000, the organisers said 100,000. The square (which holds 40,000) was full before the section of the march behind the samba band arrived. So I think its fair to say that 50-60,000 were in attendance.
On 18 March members and supporters of the Revolutionary Communist Group (RCG) and its newspaper Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! mounted a lively protest in the centre of Newcastle, as part of the international day of action against the continuing occupation of Iraq.
