Larry Cox, head of Amnesty International, silent as guard assaults activist.

26-11-2008 03:25

Banner, you can do it too.
Larry Cox, head of Amnesty International, stood silent as a guard violently assaulted a human rights activist who asked him a question at a public gathering at the Ethical Culture Society.

The four minute Youtube video was posted at:

 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qHqDjL8gR18

The activist was there to draw attention to AI's support of the Merida Initiative, aka, Plan Mexico, a military aid package that arms the Mexican army and police who are involved in the murder and arrest of activists in Oaxaca and Chiapas and the massacres in Atenco.

Realities after the dollar and before the Revolution

08-11-2008 22:55

The following article from Le Monde Diplo (not available on-line without subscription) is useful. These extracts jumped out at me:

"Only the combination of acknowledged economic power and an attractive, original political vision could overthrow the prevailing system or allow all its participants to be treated as equals" and "we are still a long way from a united front with the capacity to impose new international rules or dethrone the dollar and its institutional props, the IMF and the World Bank."

For "we are still a long way off" I would like to suggest we must read "revolution"; meaning sustained & decentralised simultaneous organisation on a national/transnational scale.

Six Deaths by Eviction in Chiapas Ejido

08-10-2008 10:49

Although not Zapatistas the 6 peasants murdered by the Mexican police were exercising their right to control over their territory in an area which has seen over 500 years of repression. Indigenous and peasant groups in Chiapas have faced a counterinsurgency war since the Zapatista uprising in 1994 resulting in massacres like that of 'Las Abejas' in Acteal in 1997 when 49 peasants were murdered.

In memory of SAlly Grace activist raped and murdered in Oaxaca

04-10-2008 12:16

Sally's murder may have passed as yet another case of sexual violence, completely unrelated to her political work with some of the most persecuted organizations in Oaxaca. But Sally's friends in Oaxaca City know that she was being followed as a result of her human rights work and her associations with CIPO and other Oaxacan organizations for whom political violence is a daily fact of life.

Zapatista solidarity protests at Edinburgh, Bournemouth and European Airports

24-08-2008 09:25

Zapatista solidarity protest at Edinburgh Airport
Passengers hurrying into the main check-in at Edinburgh international airport on 22 August were greeted by an unusual sight. A massive banner proclaimed: “ MEXICO ...Sun…Fun…bloomin’ nice beaches…”, alongside a painting of a palm tree. A somewhat eccentric Mexican tourist board initiative perhaps?
Not exactly. “Torture….Death Squads…Human Rights Breaches…” continued the lower half of the banner, with a carefully painted AK47 illustrating the point.
