In This Climate Of Fear The Energy Giants Must Not Win

We live in times of fear : fear of terrorism, fear of energy shortages, fear of climate change. Which do you fear most?

The governments of the USA and UK would have you believe that terrorism is the thing to fear above all else : the Eastern Hoards collaborating in their cells to bring down the Evil West. Hot on its heels comes the mystical phrase “energy security” : an all encompassing term meaning essentially anything that gets in the way of continual power to feed our irrepressible need. Climate change is important too, or so the powers would have us believe, but in the end, like all things in politics, it’s the things that are out of the ordinary person’s control – terrorism and security – that really drive policy.

The growing ranks of Peak Oil deniers have been joined by an unexpected ally in the form of darling of the left, Greg Palast. In his new book, Armed Madhouse he expressed his opinion that peak oil is nothing more than a plot by big oil to extract higher and higher profits. His views are quickly and easily dismissed by looking at the history of new discoveries for new oil fields compared to the rates of extraction and demand. Blair is pushing on with the new nuclear agenda by talking of addressing the coming energy gap and climate change... but no mention of peak oil.

"We're going to move from being self-sufficient in basic energy to a situation of importing energy. Fifteen years down the line we have got high energy prices and real problems.", he said.

L'Oreal and Boots use nanoparticles in sunscreens and cosmetics, the Gap and Next are putting nanoparticles in clothes to make them stain and wrinkle resistant, Smith and Nephew are putting them in bandages while chemical company BASF are putting nanoparticles in food additives into drinks. Meanwhile Unilever and Nestle are working on nanoparticle ice cream. Unfortunately products that contain nanomaterials do not have to be labeled
