Anti-Tar Sands Protests Gather Momentum
IMC UK Features , 15-04-2010 - 08:01
This time last year, few people in the UK had even heard of the Alberta Tar Sands. Now they are moving rapidly up the public agenda, thanks largely to a growing grassroots campaign of resistance and international solidarity. The latest example of this has been the national “Fortnight of Shame” (April 1st- 15th 2010) to oppose BP's planned involvement in the tar sands, which came to a head on Saturday 10th with protests in London, Oxford, Brighton and Cambridge, including a Party at the Pumps in Sheperds Bush, and which culminated on Thursday 15th April with the BP + Tar Sands = Climate Crime protest outside the BP Shareholders AGM at the ExCel Conference Centre. Party at the Pumps – Pix-&-Vidz – Sat 10 Apr 10
Tim Dalinian Jones , 14-04-2010 - 12:00
Dateline: Party at the Pumps, Shepherd's Bush Green BP Petrol Station, London, UK, 13:00-17:00, Sat 10 Apr 10 – Hundreds of people descend upon the BP petrol station on the south side of Shepherd's Bush Common for a four hour long 'Party at the Pumps'. Dancing to live music from the Rhythms of Resistance samba band and the Green Kite Midnight ceilidh band, plus MP3s piped through the Bicycology sound system, we rocked the forecourt, left peacefully and there were no arrests. But why? This was the London direct action component of an International Day of Action on the Canadian Tar Sands – the single most dirty, toxic and dangerous climate crime atrocity on Earth; and the centrepiece of the 'BP Fortnight of Shame', culminating in a vote at the BP shareholder's AGM in London on Thursday 15 April 2010 to keep BP out of the planet-trashing Canadian Tar Sands (protest details below).

BP ad campaign hoax kicks off the Fortnight of Shame
RIsing Tide and UK Tar Sands Network , 01-04-2010 - 14:38
BP today had to halt the launch of a multi-million pound ‘Back to Black’ ad campaign. That’s right, BP’s award-winning ‘beyond petroleum’ brand took a hit today when a, previously unknown, PR agency delivered 22,000 revamped BP logos and a new sign to the company’s headquarters in St. James’ Square. The ad agency misinterpreted the brief to come up with a new logo that took account of BP’s decision to invest in the Canadian tar sands, and launched the multi-million pound ‘Back to Black’ campaign.

Dateline: Southwark Crown Court, London, UK, 09:40-10:30, Tue 30 Mar 10 – On a grey and wet morning, a mere handful of protesters gathered for what we took to be the first substantive court appearance of the MP's Expenses Scandal Scapegoats. But we learned that the Press Association had already announced that the crooked "New" Labour porkers Elliot Morley, David Chaytor, Jim Devine weren't even going to show up! While inside Court No. 2 the swindlers' silks pleaded Parliamentary Privilege as their excuse for justice evasion, outside on the court steps, our People's Court put their whole corrupt-to-the-core system on trial.

Dateline: Trafalgar Square, London, UK, 12:00-13:30, Sat 13 Feb 10 – On the opening day of the Winter Olympics in Canada, around 50 folk mobilised by the UK Tar Sands Network and London Rising Tide partook of sporting events of a sharper, more satirical sort: The Canadian Tar Sands Oil-ympics. With Canada House as a backdrop, among the Canadian-state-funded ballyhoo of big screen live feeds and 5-ring ice sculptures, we staged tug-o-war, relay race and street curling events to help highlight the biggest single industrial climate crime on Earth: the Canadian-state-backed toxic rape of tar sands deposits in Alberta, and the consequent death wave decimating the boreal forest, its flora, fauna, water courses and indigenous First Nations people.
