Techie and terrorist behavioural profiles are the same

27-09-2005 01:55

‘LONDON (Reuters): - A London underground train station was evacuated and part of a main east-west line closed in a security alert on Thursday, three weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 people on the transport network, police said. A Transport Police spokeswoman said Southwark station was closed and Jubilee Line services suspended between Waterloo and Canary Wharf in the east London business district.’

This Reuters story was written while the police were detaining me in Southwark tube station and the bomb squad was checking my rucksack. When they were through, the two explosive specialists walked out of the tube station smiling and commenting ‘nice laptop’. The officers offered apologies on behalf of the Metropolitan Police. Then they arrested me.

Sari Horwitz writes, a few days after my arrest, in the Washington Post:

‘After the July 7 attacks on the London transit system by suicide bombers, the international police chiefs organization produced a detailed training guide for dealing with suicide bombers [that] recommends [...] an officer needs to use lethal force to stop someone who fits a certain behavioral profile.’

Be part of a radio revolution

19-09-2005 17:50

rampART radio is an internet radio station which was orginally set up to provide independent coverage during the London European Social Forum held in October 2004. When the ESF finished rampART struggled on putting out daily news and events listings, along with some of the best revolutionary tunes and parodies you are likely to come across anywhere on the net. Over the last year the station has had it's share of up's and downs, including a month of down time when we lost our ADSL internet connection after the post office decided not to deliver any more post (including our phone bill). During the G8 in July, rampART radio provided 5 days of live up-to-the-minute coverage and enjoyed it's highest ever audiences as the stream was rebroadcast around the world. rampART radio also played a role in covering the protests against DSEi and even the London bombings after the G8.

Now, almost one year since it was created, I propose to kill rampART radio.

Ok, not exactly kill but certainly a rebirth in a very different form.

CALL 4 NODES - BE A PART, DON'T BE APART :: hackmeeting 2005

16-09-2005 19:06

- BE A PART, DON'T BE APART

This message is a call for YOUR participation into the 2005 edition
of the Hackmeeting which is taking place this October at Menorca (Spain).
We are looking forward receiving proposals for nodes of
work/activism/difusion/conferences and, as is getting usual, a network
of activities and encounters in and around hacktivism, cyberspace,
telecommunications and its technopolitical dimensions, during a full
(and free) weekend.
We've switched from the traditional call4papers to the call4nodes where
the attendants are not restricted to just papers but to a wider range
of media (workshops, conferences, 360º tables, expositions, posters, etc)
that build-up the so-called nodes.

New UK High School Totally Internet

11-09-2005 05:40

Interhigh School opened its nonexistent doors Mon. 5 Sept. 2005: 09.30 hrs. Students went straight to work without fuss in small classes. Aged 11 - 16, mainly UK resident, with a few internationals, many have escaped bullying, or boredom, or feel they just don't fit the standard schooling system.
