Recently, we critiqued a Washington Post article that relied almost entirely on unnamed U.S. officials and a known terrorist organization to make the Iraq-redux argument that Iranian “defectors” are providing the U.S. government with critical information about Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. Yesterday, The New York Times ran an article—by Nazila Fathi, ostensibly reporting on the execution of five prisoners in Iran on Sunday—that epitomizes the same kind of agenda-driven, threat-hyping approach as the Post’s piece on Iran’s nuclear program.

The Peace Prize President in the White House continues to increase his empty, but angry rhetoric in an attempt to garner enough support for a strike on Iran. The propaganda juggernaut is in full action, and thousands of articles, TV shows, and politicians are beating the drums for a war against Iran. If this sounds eerily familiar, it's because it is.

There are those who talk and there are those who do

Edwardian notions of war are again being promoted in western democracies, along with the militarising of history, journalism and parliamentary politics. In Britain, the three main candidiates for prime minister are declared warmakers; and yet popular feeling is very different.

An organization calling itself Reporters Without Borders has just named Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, China’s President Hu Jintao, Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Nazarbayev and Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to their list of Forty Worst Predators of Press Freedom for 2010.

Most significant about their list of ‘bad guys’ is the geopolitical relation of those leaders and those countries to the current ‘enemies list’ of the US State Department. That is no accident, as becomes clear when we look more closely at who funds RWB.

On April 15, news media broadcast the first of three live, 90-minute “prime ministerial debates” between Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg, the leaders, respectively, of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties. By the end of the second debate on April 22, the word ‘Iraq’ had been mentioned a total of five times over the course of the three hours of discussion.

In the self-sensationalising world of modern media, some truths are better witnessed than told. Over the past fortnight, major media outlets have converged on Syria’s alleged delivery of scud missiles to the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah. By examining how the story first came to limelight, as well as the manner in which media sources have uncritically covered the story, one can begin to notice the vastly degenerated state of today’s media and its deeply polarising effects.

ABC joins CBS and CNN in blatant war propaganda against Iran. Based on the history of lies preceding the unlawful US armed attack and invasion of Iraq (explained verbally here), Americans have little time to stop a lie-based US armed attack of Iran. Official US policy allows first-strike use of nuclear weapons based upon these lies.

As we head towards what is likely to be one of the most overly hyped general elections in recent history (voter confidence is down don't you know!) we felt the need to express a different opinion. An opinion that we have had enough of this sham democracy (in fact some of us have little faith in democracy altogether), that not only do these politicians not represent us but that any system of government is incapable representing us.

We have put together an (anti)election poster. We hope that whilst we have put this out in the lead up to the 2010 general elections it remains relevant until we have rid our lives of this filthy charade.

For the second time in Switzerland an anarchist bookfair will take place. This time, it will be in the bilingual city of Biel-Bienne, wich has a long anarchist tradition, an old town that is worth visiting and a beautiful countryside, between the lake and jurassian hills. Equally, this year, many french, german and swiss editions will be there to present you the anti-autoritarian contemporary litterature. The intellectual thirst can be quenched with many different conferences and workshops. Multiple cultural events will be sure to provide a good general atmosphere.
