Greek capitalism – a tragedy in several parts

24-02-2010 12:30 | Analysis | Globalisation | Other Press | World

Greece is the latest in a line of countries squeezed by the ongoing financial crises continuing to ripple around the world. It is an important case to watch, more so than say Iceland or Ireland, as the situation in Greece is closer to the economic positions of the UK – both have governments who form an important part of economy, and are financially overstretched.

Syria: A Clenched US Fist Behind the Hand of Friendship

19-02-2010 18:43 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | World

Charles Hunter, Chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus
The announcement by Washington today that it is appointing an ambassador to Syria – after an absence of five years – is being hailed in the western media as another example of the Obama administration’s “policy of engagement” for regional peace.

The seeming US hand of friendship towards Syria is more accurately understood as the further clenching of Washington’s fist towards Iran.

The media response to the growing influence of the 9/11 truth movement

15-02-2010 15:31 | Analysis | Other Press | Social Struggles | World

In the past year, in response to emerging independent science on the 9/11 attacks, nine corporate, seven public, and two independent media outlets aired analytic programs investigating the official account.

Increasingly, the issue is treated as a scientific controversy worthy of debate, rather than as a "conspiracy theory" ignoring science and common sense.

More civilian deaths as US launches offensive in southern Afghanistan

15-02-2010 09:11 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

In what is likely to be the first of many such atrocities, two US military rockets slammed into a house near Marjah, the target of the current offensive, killing 12 people. US military authorities admitted that the victims were innocent civilians sheltering in their own home, as they had been advised to do by US and NATO officials.

State of Emergency Declared in Italian Prison System

14-02-2010 11:44 | Other Press | Repression | World

2009 was a particularly bad year for the Italian prison system, especially if you happened to be one of its ‘guests’ having to suffer the severe overcrowding that was exacerbated by an overall lack of funding in the system. As a result, the summer saw a series of prison protests, including mass hunger strikes and riots, as well an explosion in a historically already high rate of suicide, self-harm and other ‘suspicious’ deaths.

Why the media silence on the Flight 253 bombing hearings?

13-02-2010 14:06 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Repression | World

Hearing before the US House Committee on Homeland Security, 27 January 2010
The media’s failure to report the January 27 Congressional hearings on last Christmas’s Flight 253 bomb plot is both extraordinary and ominous.

The blackout is a devastating exposure of the state of US politics. If events do not fit the concocted “connect-the-dots” script, the political establishment treats them, in Orwellian style, as if they had never happened. This, in turn, further strengthens the power of the national-security apparatus inside the state, as it learns that it can plan operations risking mass deaths with impunity.

The Tortoise Protection Group are not an Animal Rights group...it is a con

04-02-2010 14:02 | Animal Liberation | Ecology | Other Press | South Coast | World

The Tortoise Protection Group have conned a number of Animal Rights Activists into helping, raising and donating money. Their website promotes the breeding of captive tortoises as pets. There are also a number of dodgy articles about very expensive stolen tortoises. It is alarming genuine AR activists that other "AR" activists are supporting this group, believed to be criminals promoting a con.

Congressional hearing reveals US intel agencies shielded Flight 253 bomber

03-02-2010 12:59 | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

A January 27 hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security established that US intelligence agencies stopped the State Department from revoking the US visa of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The Nigerian student, whom US officials suspected of being affiliated with the Yemeni terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, attempted to set off a bomb on Northwest Flight 253 into Detroit on Christmas Day. Revocation of Abdulmutallab’s visa would have prevented him from boarding the airplane.

Importance of including truth emergency in the progressive media reform movement

30-01-2010 21:22 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | World

Almost 1,000 scientific professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, and physics have now concluded that the official explanation for the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings is implausible according to laws of physics.

This conclusion should be a part of our political discourse given how much of the policy in the past eight years has been based on assumptions about 9/11.

In a free society, this type of inquiry would be a matter of civic principle, not national ridicule, which it what it has largely been when it has not been totally ignored by corporate media.

How Alternative Media Provide the Crucial Critique of the Mainstream

20-01-2010 14:28 | Analysis | Other Press | Sheffield | World

On January 4, Tim Luckhurst, former BBC journalist and current Professor of Journalism at the University of Kent, wrote an article in the Independent with the dramatic title, ‘Demise of news barons is just a Marxist fantasy.’ Luckhurst argued that leftist critics are gleefully predicting the end of corporate journalism:

“There will be no further need for newspapers or broadcasters to host debates and represent public opinion. The internet will let every citizen speak for themselves. The masses will seize the means of media production. We will witness an era of revolutionary change.” ( http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/opinion/tim-luckhurst-demise-of-news-barons-is-just-a-marxist-fantasy-1856668.html)
