Background to the Polish & US / Russia missile crises silliness.

14-08-2008 18:39 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | World

As fans of aunty Beeb will have noticed we have just moved one step closer to a proper geopolitical crises this afternoon with agreement being reached by Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, and US Under-Secretary of State John Rood to station 10 missile interceptors in the eastern European state.

This surprise announcement came after what had been described as a "further round of Polish-US talks will take place in Warsaw regarding the placing of elements of the US anti-missile defence system in Poland."

SDP Leader/BBC blunder on Russia-Georgia war

10-08-2008 18:13 | Analysis | Other Press | World

The BBC broadcast an interview with former Foreign Secretary and former SDP Leader David Owen, in which he said it had been right to block Georgia's NATO membership because it did not border on any NATO country. Georgia borders on Turkey, which has the second largest army in NATO.

Gitmo, Art, Torture, Entertainment - "Waterboard Thrill Ride" opens in NYC

07-08-2008 15:13 | Analysis | Other Press | Terror War | World

probably supplied by the lowest bidder - that is the capitalist way
"Waterboard Thrill Ride" is the name of an art installation by Steven Powers which has just opened in New York's Coney Island amusement park. Beckoned by a sign reading "It don't Gitmo better!" happy tourists can witness 2 robots simulate water boarding
if they put one dollar in the slot and peak through the bars..

They can then go away unhappy tourists.

3 years 2 days since the last - Mauritania has a coup.

06-08-2008 20:19 | Analysis | Migration | Other Press | World

At first glance the news that the 147th richest (or 36th poorest) state on the planet with less than 4 million population has had yet another coup d'etat might not seem newsworthy. Until you realise that current European migration & "drug war" policies hinge on the amenability of the regime in the desert state.

Although the EU has only set aside €156 million of aid for 2008-2013 or roughly 54 million sterling a year - a myriad of agreements made since the last coup d'etat have allowed for the EU to start their southern border against migration in the buffer zone just the other side of our 2,720 km long security fence for Africa.

With Troops on the street, the Fascists must be in power.

05-08-2008 18:46 | Anti-militarism | Migration | Other Press | World

There has been the usual mix of resigned reactions and utterly vile apologism in English language media globally today to news that 3,000 Italian soldiers are patrolling Rome, Naples & Milan with that states police in the latest measure to "stop crime" which according to Berlusconi and crew is all caused by illegal migrants, gypsies or people who carry the gene for premature balding yet inexplicably still have a full head of virile hairy hair.

Oh yes. Especially those ones.

For so long people used the wicked word "Fascist" to describe the Italian right that it has now lost all its proper power to shock. What next they asked too many times.
So we no longer read the question marks after Camps? Striped Pyjamas? Caged Ghettoes?

El Salvador will not leave Iraq "till Iraqis control the situation"

03-08-2008 20:48 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Other Press | World

It's all very easy at times to forget that when the proper instruments of international arbitration were sidelined (UN) and systematically delegitamized (IAEA) in the lead-up to the illegal war on aggression on Iraq in 2003 the subsequent classified occupying power still being the USA, there was assembled a motley crew of states termed the "coalition of the willing".

17 of that group withdrew their troops. But plucky little El Salvador which sent 360 soldiers at the beginning will deploy its 10th contigent of 200 next week - according to a Radio broadcast today by presidente Elías Antonio Saca.

Human Interest angles on Karadzic's Detenion

31-07-2008 19:33 | Other Press | World

Flicking (as you do) through the online pages of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia's webpages today, since they're in the news with the trial of ex-guru faith-healer & genocidal monster Radovan Karadzic, I noticed one thing which is very different from the pages which were presented for Milosevic when he had his few days in court.

It's not that the indictment of Milosevic mentioned Karadzic and was filled with "outside players" and the indictment of Karadzic doesn't mention Milosevic and only barely touches the Yugoslav army as an outside player.

Nope. It's something much more mundane than that.

There is a whole page of "copyright waived" photographs of the detention unit for our ghoulish entertainment.

The Gary McKinnon show starts countdown to European HR court.

30-07-2008 18:12 | Analysis | Other Press | Repression | World

if i needed a thumb I would thumb it at you
A long time ago in a galaxy just down memory lane a young Glaswegian Gary McKinnon made the news. 4 years later he was still making it :-
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/05/339905.html

Since then he has had documentaries made about him, a support website set up for him, been to courts and even the Lords. He spoke movingly about not wanting to be sent to Gitmo. Quite sensible too.

In Gitmo no-one hears you scream.

The possibility of a retaliatory attack by Iran on US bases in the region

30-07-2008 11:28 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Terror War | London | World

[4] Sunday Times, 13 July 2008
The US Airbase in Incirlik, Turkey contains 90 nuclear warheads. As was the case in Afghanistan and Iraq, this base is likely to play a crucial role in a prospective war against Iran. Moreover, the Sunday Times map (see item 4) indicates that the use of Turkish airspace by Israel is also being planned, with the tacit consent of the Turkish authorities.

GW Bush signs "first" US military death warrent in 51 years.

29-07-2008 18:23 | History | Other Press | World

Ronald A. Gray, 42, was convicted in connection with a spree of four murders and eight rapes in the Fayetteville, N.C., area between April 1986 and January 1987 while he was stationed at Fort Bragg. He has been on death row at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., since April 1988.

"While approving a sentence of death for a member of our armed services is a serious and difficult decision for a commander in chief, the president believes the facts of this case leave no doubt that the sentence is just and warranted,"..........."The president's thoughts and prayers are with the victims of these heinous crimes and their families and all others affected," White House press secretary Dana Perino said.
