Re-affirming Human Rights and the Filipino People' Dignity

Although Human Rights Day is celebrated only once a year, all Filipinos who love freedom and justice--as well as all citizens of countries that signed the United Nations Charter--should practise and apply to their everyday lives the principles embodied in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, a document which is an integral part of international law and also of the constitutions of nation-states who are members of the UN. The following article is a tribute to all activists involved in the promotion of human rights, in particular to Filipino activists in KARAPATAN, the Filipino human rights monitoring organization, to its staff and secretary-general, Marie Hilao Enriquez.

EarthFirst! blockade at coal-fired power plant in Rotterdam, NL

On Saturday morning a collective of twenty Dutch EarthFirst! activists blocked the coal conveyor- belt to a plant owned by the German energy giant E.on on the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. This day, December 8, has been announced as an international actionday in the protest against the coal industry. The growing number of coal-fired power plants worldwide and in the Netherlands at the moment is the biggest threath to the climate. Secondly, this action is part of the protest against the plans for a new E.on coal-fired plant, right next to the existing one on the Maasvlakte.

Movement for Justice in el Barrio, a New York based (mainly Latino migrant) community organisation fighting against gentrification through direct-democracy, and fighting capitalism as adherents of the Zapatista's Other Campaign, want to tour the UK in 2008.

They want to meet with and exchange stories and lessons with anti-gentrification groups, anti-capitalist groups and migrant groups here and begin planning actions against their main enemy, their London based landlord.

Some UK based organisations are up for making this happen, but we need more help.
