Rhine Capitalism, Anglo-Saxon Capitalism and Redistribution

19-10-2004 17:07 | European Social Forum | Social Struggles | World

Anglo-Saxon capitalism is an unbridled capitalism whose profit logic overrules all social and environmental interests. Rhine capitalism still has a social quality and social nets so workers are not reduced to cost factors. "The Cold War against the social state leaves behind another republic." (Ruth Fuchs)

Urgent Action - Please support Luke Winston-Jones

19-10-2004 12:38 | Health | Social Struggles | World

Only days after the High Court ruled that it is OK for doctors to refuse to offer life support to Charlotte Whyatt, the family of another disabled baby are facing the same Right to Life battle.

Luke Winston-Jones's mother Ruth will be at the High Court in London this coming Thursday and Friday to fight for her son's life.

As Ruth says "Luke is a beautiful child who has real quality of life and is full of personality. Luke’s biggest health problem at the moment is the hole he has in his heart which Alder Hey and other hospitals in the UK have refused to correct due to the fact that Luke has Edwards syndrome. Luke is being refused the treatment he so vitally needs, even though children with Edwards can live many years."

Luke's family have asked disabled people and their allies to show their solidarity by coming to the courts on either 21st or 22nd October and or to sign the following petition.

If you want to get involved simply cut and paste the following and add your name and address on sending.

Petition

We do not think that judges and medical staff should be able to decide on who should or should not receive life saving treatment on the basis of disability / impairment. We support Luke Winston-Jones Equal Rights to Life. We call upon Parliament to amend the Disability Discrimination Act so that disabled children like Luke have equal right to life and access to life saving treatment.

Venezuela: After the Referendum

13-10-2004 12:42 | Venezuela | Analysis | Social Struggles | World

* The August 2004 elections legitimized Hugo Chávez's presidency, approved by the multinational powers-that-be, despite the opposition's claims of electoral fraud. We, at El Libertario (issue 39, September/October 2004), presented an indepth analysis of the consecuences of the referendum, as well as proposals for action in the new circumstances. We shall now quote a couple of notes from that issue that express the essence of the venezuelan anarchists' perspective.

Saddest case - Charlotte Wyatt

09-10-2004 03:13 | Analysis | Health | Social Struggles | World

A quick look decision, in relation to Charlotte Wyatt, a very sick child in the UK, that may have some major legal problems. It may also be an indicator, of larger scale problems, with the UK justice system.

Mandatory state suicide? Wait just a goddamn cotton pickin minute...

When A Beautiful Soul Comes To Visit

Tali Fahima , an Israeli woman under administrative detention, joins Palestinian women and girls held in prisons as political prisoners. The way in which Israel keeps them is cruel, without conscience and in violation of many human rights.

The Prison authority is answerable only to the Prime Minister, who has, himself, been accused of war crimes.
Please ask for a full investigation into the human rights violations.

Beyond State and Paid Labor

08-10-2004 12:28 | Social Struggles | World

"Basic security is the positive answer to the crisis of the capitalist work society. The far-reaching uncoupling of labor and income contradicts essential premises of the capitalist exploitation logic and therefore contains a dynamic that points beyond the system. Its realization is more a question of the social and political hierarchies of power than of material possibilities.."

Chiapas The Resistance - Caracol 1 La Realidad

07-10-2004 15:19 | Globalisation | Social Struggles | Zapatista | World

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary the Mexican daily paper La Jornada has published a special supplement entitled Chiapas : The Resistance. Written by Gloria Munoz Ramirez, this collection of articles takes us on a journey through the different Caracoles (zapatista centres) in each of the five zones of the Zapatista resistance. The ongoing projects are evaluated and the political context analysed. We learn of the dreams which have become reality, and the dreams which are still to be realised.
