U.S. Supreme Court Will Not Take Argentina and NML Capital Debt Case

07-10-2013 18:39 | Analysis | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

The U.S. Supreme Court decided not to take the landmark debt case between Argentina and bondholders led by NML Capital, a hedge fund that buys the debt of countries in financial crisis. Argentina is expected to file a second petition in the coming months that the Supreme Court will review and decide again if it will hear the case. In June, Argentina filed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court asking the court to overturn a ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals made last October. The ruling ordered Argentina to pay bondholders $1.33 billion based on the court’s interpretation of a pari passu, or parity clause.

What to do amidst a vast apparatus designed, as Graeber wrote in episode 624, to "perpetuate hopelessness"? Chris Hedges recommends a path of courageous and unflinching non-violent resistance to the US plutocrats. We hear a 90 minute interview from earlier this week, interspersed with half of a classic Hedges speech, "War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning".

BAMN - BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

Over the next 17 years, Pinochet killed and tortured thousands under his dictatorial rule. On the same day, in 1998, anarchist Claudia López was shot dead by cops of the reinstated democracy, while fighting at a barricade during a commemoration of the coup d’etat.

Cameron hasn't signed Crossrail Step-Free Access EDM.Nor has a Tower Hamlets MP!

29-08-2013 15:13 | Public sector cuts | Social Struggles | London | World

Only a handful of MPs have bothered to sign up to the House of Commons Early day Motion [=EDM] supporting the demand that Crossrail stations are made step-free accessible. This is the fact on the UK House of Commons parliament.uk web site at the time of writing 1500 Hrs GMT Thursday 29 August 2013. What a contrast to the Dave Cameron fetish for war fare! He hasn't bothered to sign the EDM either. Nor has any MP from Tower Hamlets, present or recent past! Crossrail has been based at Canary Wharf in Tower Hamlets where campaigners handed in the Campaign Demand this lunchtime. Khoodeelaar! signed the DEMAND handed in.

Is One Year of Slave Rule Enough Already?

07-08-2013 17:40 | Social Struggles | World

Despite all violence, lies and hypocrisy, Egypt has not ceased bleeding since the military coup that killed its avantgarde role in the revolution a month ago. The wound has been inflicted externally out of a malignant observer role and targeted against the process of constitutional rebuilding rather than against the geopolitical assets of the country, as an internal power rivalry would suggest. Objectively it has changed things from bad to worse – while the deposed president is not missed because he had given way too much power to the military, the latter now having grabbed all of the former´s powers is an entirely new level of misery, the opposite of a qualitative improvement. This run-up has proven that the role of a military in a revolution is that of the proverbial nose of the camel in the tent. If it is not pushed out with all appropriate determination, soon the entire thing will try to squeeze itself in, with predictable results. But only in this aspect the Egyptian military can be compared to a local animal, because it is just as externally manipulated as it is externally paid. What occurred against Egypt in the form of this incident is a failure of the international system – the last beacon of human reason has walked out of the discourse surrounding the country, and the consequence is obvious – the disarmament is stalling and people are dying.

UG#658 - Countering Intelligence 1

07-08-2013 15:33 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

The USA has 14 so-called "intelligence services". How "intelligent" are they, what "services" do they perform for whom? Who decides what they get up to? Who even knows? If killing is wrong, is it any less so if done for money behind pretenses of 'national secrecy'? What about helping pay for such acts, for example, by paying taxes? This week, a radio adaptation of Scott Noble's latest film uncovers more of the dark secrets of the security state, from the destabilization of the 1975 Australian government to the Nugan Hand Bank and the organization of global drug trafficking.

Ian Tomlinson was condemned by BBC News presenter Chris Eakin within minutes

06-08-2013 01:27 | Analysis | Policing | Social Struggles | London | World

The Met Police has "apologised" to Ian Tomlinson's family. But the BBC hasn't!
Yet the BBC ought to do so as well. And sack Chris Eakin. It was Eakin who condemned Tomlinson within minutes of Tomlinson's death at Police hands.
As he read the so-called breaking news about Ian Tomlinson's death, Eakin
went out of his way to make a very detailed statement blaming the demonstrators for
Tomlinson's death and in fact said words to the effect that Tomlinson himself had to blame.
