More Vietnam Atrocities

22-11-2003 18:07 | Anti-militarism | World

Nick Turse has done an excellent job in documenting that My Lai and the Tiger Force atrocities were not isolated incidents, but he misses an important point. Disappearances, hideous torture techniques, mutilations, rapes, etc. serve a very logical purpose in US counterinsurgency strategy. In Vietnam it was called the Phoenix Program. It is savage intimidation designed to reduce popular support for guerrilla fighters. In recent terminology, it is shock and awe.

November 17th
Asking the Fairies

There are buildings in Baghdad, old government premises, secret police offices, properties formerly owned by members of the ruling clique and Saddam's family, officers' clubs, military barracks, houses, apartment blocks which are now squatted by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of families made homeless by bombings during the invasion and evictions after.

U.S. Energy Bill Stuffed with Fossil Fuel Industry Subsidies; Warming Continues

21-11-2003 15:20 | Bush 2003 | Anti-militarism | Ecology | Health | London | World

Despite not being afforded the benefit of a public hearing, the massive $31.1 billion energy bill being debated in the U.S. Senate today has garnered massive public opposition, and with good reason. Call your senators today. Tell them which way you recommend they vote.

It's Still a Jungle Out There: Congo's Slow Move to Recovery

20-11-2003 00:33 | Anti-militarism | World

As aid workers arrive with their food and medical supplies, they are often greeted by rifle-toting rebel militias. Sometimes, the rebels simply observe; sometimes, they liberate the supplies for themselves. Historically, it has been supposed that most of these rebels are not Congolese but rather from neighboring countries, particularly Rwanda and Uganda. Although those neighbors deny any recent involvement, a United Nations report issued this week disagrees.

Thank you from the USA for doing the right thing and protesting
to our president and his entourage over the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
It is amazing here in the U.S. how the great majority don't know or are ill-informed
on the lies the invasion was based on.

Letter from America - THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROTESTS!

Seattle Police Attacking Americans at LEIU Protests, June 2, 2003
I am an American activist who is appalled by our President Bush, and am writing to support your Bush protests from America. I saw Bush on American TV last night. An announcer from the UK said he had never seen this much vehemence towards a U.S. president in the UK EVER. Bush's response was that he was HAPPY to go to a country where protest/free speech was openly embraced and allowed. The hypocrisy here is unbelievable.

Campaign funds to bush/cheney.

17-11-2003 12:05 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Indymedia | Liverpool | World

The tribes chairman and his son have given campaign contributions to the bush/cheney 2004 election cycle. As someone who is a native American Indian I find this most embarrassing to state that I am a Cowlitz Indian after learning that the Chairman of the tribe used Our official name when he and his son gave $2,000 each plus the wife on the council also gave $2,000.

Cannon Fodder

16-11-2003 03:13 | Bush 2003 | Anti-militarism | World

The Bush administration has cut veteran's benefits and forced wounded American soldiers to pay for hospital meals. They have kept returning sick and wounded soldiers in miserable conditions on US military bases and made them wait months for doctor's appointments. Now, they want to close schools and commissaries on military bases and privatize the remaining commissaries. Oh well, that means more taxpayer money for Halliburton, Bechtel and all the other corporations profiting immensely from the Iraq war.

The First and Last Casualties of War are Civilians

13-11-2003 10:12 | Anti-militarism | London | World

In 1917 a North American senator, Hiram Johnson, wrote, "The first casualty when war comes, is truth." In the light of recent events it would appear that truth was cloaked in secrecy long before official hostilities in Iraq began. The new mantra for the 21st Century should be "the first and last casualties of war are civilians."
