The Chomsky/Blankfort Polemic - Interview

Tel-Aviv and Washington are linked in the Middle East. That's a fact. But the importance of this link in Washington's colonial politics is being debated in the anti-imperialist movement. For the US, Jewish, anti-Zionist journalist Jeffrey Blankfort, Israeli influence is central to US policy and the anti-war movement has failed because of its inability to understand the importance of this lobby. Having developed a radical approach to this question, going so far as to deny the energy factor in the war in Iraq, Mr. Blankfort nonetheless opens interesting paths on Zionist influence in the United States. We reproduce an interview he gave to journalist Silvia Cattori. Read more >>

Viva Zapatero! media wars tonight!

In just a few more days Italy will have what some people are describing as the most important election in the history of the country. For five years the country has suffered plundering intimidation and sadness. Berlusconi, a multi billionaire media tycoon is turning the full force of his media empire to the efforts of winning a second term. Opposing him is the majority of the population and a growing alternative media movement from Indymedia, pirate TV, social centres and bloggers. Read more >>

HIGH COURT JUDGE CONDEMNS ARMS COMPANY’S LEGAL TACTICS

On Thursday 23rd March 2006 a High Court Judge handed
down a damning judgement against an arms company. He
struck out an interim injunction against remaining
defendants in the controversial harassment injunction
case brought against anti-war protesters in Brighton
by arms manufacturers EDO MBM Technology Ltd.

The case has been continuing in the High Court for
nearly a year without reaching a full trial despite an
court order that a speedy trial should be prepared
for because of ‘human rights implications’.
‘The blame for loss of the trial date in my view
undoubtedly lies with the claimants’ says Judge
Walker. Read more >>

Tatchell: Why I support freedom of expression

Peter Tatchell says free speech is under attack and needs defending

"The strength and survival of free society and the advance of human knowledge depend on the free exchange of ideas. All ideas are capable of giving offence, and some of the most powerful ideas in human history, such as those of Galileo and Darwin, have given profound religious offence in their time. The free exchange of ideas depends on freedom of expression and this includes the right to criticise and mock. We assert and uphold the right of freedom of expression and call on our elected representatives to do the same. We abhor the fact that people throughout the world live under mortal threat simply for expressing ideas and we call on our elected representatives to protect them from attack and not to give comfort to the forces of intolerance that besiege them." Right to public racism march shames the left this Saturday

A ramshackle bunch of organisations, many leaning to the extreme right has come together to organise the March for Free Expression this Saturday.

That it should come to this … fear and loathing on the swp march

should’ve known, I really should. I mean when it comes to cynical, piss taking of this merry band of useless marching muppets I’m the worst offender… but somehow, well the glorious events taking place in France, the line of mounted riot cops I saw leaving Islington nick on my way there, well it got my blood running, got my hopes up that this day would be more than the usual impotent trot through London, that perhaps, just perhaps this would be the day that something might happen.
