US Government Report Undermines Zimbabwe Opposition’s Claim of Independence

The US government had a hand in formulating the policy platform of the Tsvangirai faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, and funded community-based newsletters to create a platform to persuade Zimbabweans to accept Washington’s point of view, according to a US government report. The report boasts that Washington is the undisputed leader in nurturing anti-government civil society organizations in Zimbabwe, operating through a CIA-interlocked organization led by former New York investment banker and Michael Milken right-hand man, Peter Ackerman.

The first West Africa Regional Conference of the African Socialist International (ASI), held in Freetown-Sierra Leone from October 20-22, 2008 was attended by over 500 people each day, with roughly 80% of its participants less than 30 years old. It was also attended by international observers, including the Ambassador from Iran, who delivered a solidarity statement from that country.

Iranians for Peace is proud to announce its exciting event on Monday 27 October. It is a chance to hear one of the most important figures from the Iranian Civil Society, Baquer Namazi, the chairman of the Board of Directors of "Hamyaran" the Iranian NGO resource center, speak. He will show a short film on their latest projects followed by a presentation. We will then have a distinguished panel focusing on the standoff between Iran and the west and the effects of the forthcoming US election on Iran. Our panelist are: Akbar Etemad, the honorary co-chair of "Iranians for Peace" and the founder of "Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and Farhang Jahanpour, a tutor at the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford and a former Senior Fulbright Research Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard.

'Last week university students and lecturers joined for the first time in a growing wave of protests against cuts and reforms imposed by Berlusconi's young education minister, Mariastella Gelmini. Following sit-ins and marches, the main trade union federations have called for a one-day general education strike on October 30' (The Guardian).

A senior manager has been found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct for discrimination against a transgender teacher. Philip Morgan was employed by Brighton & Hove City Council as Education, Training and Employment Manager. The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) disciplinary panel said the ex-headteacher had “brought the reputation and standing of the profession into serious disrepute.” The Council did not reprimand him, but fought and lost against the Equality & Human Rights Commission at an earlier Employment Tribunal.
