President Chavez Crossing the Rubicon

01-12-2007 20:43 | Workers' Movements | World

The Social Justice-AntiWar Movement throughout Europe and N. America could learn a lot from the real revolutionaries throughout S. America, who, after decades of foreign exploitation, have not only rejected 'Globalisation' and proven this is possible, but taken the power away from the same people corrupting the countries responsible for S. America's sad past.

If Nazis got into power they would abuse debate, then kill it
Why is the Oxford Union legitimizing, giving a platform& trying to make nazi apologisers champions of free speech?
If they dont want to extol Nazis views why did they invite 2 nazi apologisers to discuss free speech instead of Zapatistas, anarchists, activists from China or other popular activists with less access to mass media outlets?

Film "The Price of Sugar" Documents Haitian Workers in Bateyes

22-11-2007 12:20 | Anti-racism | Globalisation | Workers' Movements | World

A still from The Price of Sugar
The Price of Sugar is a powerful documentary about the plight of Haitians toiling on sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic. These workers cross the border from Haiti to labor in conditions that the film's central protagonist, Father Christopher Hartley, calls "quasi-slavery." They are housed in sugar company towns called bateyes. Stripped of identification papers, they cannot legally travel elsewhere in the country.

Hartley is a Spanish priest who came to the Dominican Republic in 1997 and wound up advocating for the cane cutters in his parish. The film gives him plenty of time to voice a thorough, articulate critique of the system which exploits the Haitians. Hartley names the superrich Vicini family as controlling the bateyes; the Vicinis have taken legal action against the film to prevent it from being screened.

Neoliberalism in Crisis

07-11-2007 13:14 | Workers' Movements | World

Liberation theology warns the future of the first world is the third world. Everyday time is replaced by kairos time, the time of decision, when lawlessness masks as lawfulness. The language of proclamation runs crossway to the language of time. Cast your net on the other side! Perhaps the first global finance market crisis will help overcome market radicalism's control of public opinion and rehabilitate state intervention.

A compañero from Europe visited us recently and got to know two of the most celebrated cases: Alcasa and Invepal. Here is the report he prepared for El Libertario # 51 about the actual working conditions in the country’s most “important” co-managed businesses.
