Stop 'Double Punishment' of Foreign nationals

There are approximately 12,000 foreign nationals in the UK prison system

It is a fundamental principle of UK law that a person cannot be punished twice for the same offence. If you have committed an offence that society deems a crime and sentenced to a term of imprisonment by a magistrate, judge or judge and jury, once you have completed your sentence, you are released from prison as it is deemed you have repaid your debt to society and that is the end of the matter - and for the great majority of people in the UK, it is: you can only get punished once.

The Home Secretary has now brought *************** a gay person seeking asylum in the UK, back to the UK from Uganda where he was unlawfully deported last year. Jacqui Smith was ordered to do this by a High Court judge on 19th February. He arrived back in the UK last Friday and was detained in Tinsley House IRC before being released yesterday afternoon.

Kadesh Desturi Swedi a national of DR Congo a resident of Wolverhampton is currently detained in Oakington IRC and due to be forcibly removed from the UK on Friday 13th March on Ethiopean Airways flight ET701 from London Heathrow @ 21:00 to Addis Ababa and on to DR Congo.

A Nigerian asylum seeker staged an eight-hour rooftop protest after immigration officers turned up at his family home early yesterday. Steve Umoru, 43, clambered through a skylight window and then scrambled along the roofs on Dodworth Road.

Small farmer rights groups plan to march across the city of San Felipe in Venezuela’s Yaracuy state this Saturday to demand that the hired assassins of Nelson López, a small farmer rights organizer, be brought to justice. López, who was shot fifteen times in the back last Thursday, is the 213th small farmer (campesino) to be murdered since 2001, the year the government of President Hugo Chávez passed a sweeping land reform law which set the conditions for re-distribution of idle sections of large estates to small farmers, according to the Ezequiel Zamora National Farmers’ Front (FNCEZ), one of the groups convoking Saturday’s marches.

The Lambeth Branch of UNISON, the second largest trade union in the UK, has raised over £2000 for Medical Aid for Palestinians through a fundraising drive throughout the Borough’s workplaces. Yahya al Faifi, a very brave and self-sacrificing trade unionist - and a deeply committed socialist - is facing deportation back to a tyranny in Saudi Arabia that regularly tortures and "disappears" dissidents. On 12 February, he received a rejection letter for his appeal against the refusal of his asylum claim appeal. Now, he and his family are in imminent danger of deportation from Britain.

This will be a labour and trade union movement event with banners, large numbers and as wide representation as possible.
