Maoist China foreign policy: 1970s and 1980s
The Mandate of Heaven (Excerpt). A detailed account of Maoist Chinese foreign policy is beyond the scope of this article, but some examples will illustrate the central thesis: that China’s foreign policy is in no way different from that of other world powers. The Three-Worlds Theory was used to justify Chinese alliances with right-wing reactionary governments during the 1970s and 1980s.

May Day Strike Against the War Shuts Down All U.S. West Coast Ports

05-05-2008 02:54 | Terror War | Workers' Movements | World

On May 1, every port on the West Coast of the United States was shut down to demand an end to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The historic May Day walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is the first time ever that an American union has struck against a U.S. war. The union ranks defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them to go to work. They overcame the capitulations of the ILWU leadership, which didn't want the work stoppage in the first place, tried to water it down and cowered before the threats of legal action while waving the flag. The employers' Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) declared the May 1 port shutdown an "illegal strike." But after all the huffing and puffing from the bosses' mouthpieces, the dock workers pointed the way to defeating the imperialist war by mobilizing working-class power. In the end, it was more than a work stoppage. The dock workers' May Day strike against the war was a first step, a show of what it will take to bring down the warmongers in Washington. Their "symbolic" action was felt all the way to Iraq, where dock workers in two ports stopped work in solidarity with the ILWU. But it was only a beginning. What is needed is not only industrial action but a political offensive against the Democrats and Republicans, the partner parties of American imperialism, to build a class-struggle workers party.

El Libertario # 53
* This editorial comes from issue #53 (May-June 2008) of El Libertario, a Venezuelan anarchist voice of ideas and proposals for action. It confirms our commitment to autonomous social mobilization, which has already begun to express itself through concrete struggles from below, as in the recent steelworkers conflict.

South Africa: Activist found murdered on Mayday

04-05-2008 07:54 | Globalisation | Repression | Workers' Movements | World

"The police force exists for no other purpose than to keep the workers and the poor in slavery, the capitalists and the politicians in power. We cannot call on the cops to protect us from crime, when they are the armed force of the biggest criminals of all. It is only by self-organisation, self-defence and direct action that we can win water, houses, electricity or decent working conditions – and ultimately build a great global movement of the workers, the poor and the peasants, to free ourselves of the cancers of greedy capitalists, lying politicians and murderous cops."

Grangemouth Workers Strike

27-04-2008 21:50 | Climate Chaos | Workers' Movements | World

Unite members at a Grangemouth meeting
Today sees the start of a 48 hour strike by workers at the Ineos oil refinery in Grangemouth, Central Scotland. Members of the Unite Union have staged the walk out in response to the companies discontinuation of their pension scheme, leaving workers with an uncertain future. Grangemouth produces %10 of the UK’s petrol and diesel. The strike will also cause the shutting of the Forties pipe-line, which supplies much of the UK’s fossil-fuels, including the fifth of Britain’s gas.

Grangemouth UK oil strike & bosses tactical AGM in USA details

27-04-2008 12:40 | Globalisation | Workers' Movements | World

they will be discussing tactics about grange mouth & most will be pressing Brown to crackdown www.trilateral.org
We must all support workers at Grangemouth leading fight for better pensions &safety, it is making people think about conserving fuel.
Renationalise, cooperativise& start drilling geothermal shafts rather than oil boreholes. Most rich corporations & billionaires pay little or no tax, in fact they are often subsidised, whilst most tax dosh comes from people & cooperatives.
Fuel should be rationed at pumps & at terminals by worker cooperatives for those that need it & not gas guzzlers.
This is uncopyrighted at the moment, to those in the BBC & ITV do a good job with this information & you will get our support too.

South Africa: UnFreedom Day

27-04-2008 09:56 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

Poverty and Repression do not equal Freedom
On Sunday it will be Freedom Day again. Once again we will be asked to go into stadiums to be told that we are free. Once again we will not be going to the stadiums. We will, for the third time, be mourning UnFreedom Day. Since the last UnFreedom Day we have been beaten, shot at and arrested on false charges by the police; evicted by the land invasions unit; disconnected from electricity by Municipal Security; forcibly removed to rural human dumping grounds by the Municipalities; banned from marching by the eThekwini City Manager; slandered by all those who want followers not comrades; intimidated by all kinds of people who demand the silence of the poor; threatened by new anti-poor laws; burnt in the fires; sick in the dirt and raped in the dark nights looking for a safe place to go the toilet.
