Translated statement of the occupied town hall, Nikaia, Athens, Greece

17-10-2009 19:00 | Migration | Repression | Social Struggles | World

#105 | Town hall of Nikaia, Athens is occupied after demo for the police killing of Mohammad Atif Kamran; statement by the occupation’s assembly.

Mohammad Atif Kamran was a 25-year old migrant from Pakistan. On September 26, Mohammad’s house was raided by police who beat him, dragged him to the local police station and tortured him. On October 10, Mohammad passed away (more on his case here).

Today, a week after Mohammad’s death, a demonstration was called at Nikaia, the Athens suburb where he lived, by anarchist groups. At the end of the demonstration, some people entered the local town hall and occupied – as of now (19.00 GMT) the occupation continues.

What follows is a rough translation of the assembly of the occupied town hall.

Demonstrate to stop deportations to Iraq tomorrow - new info

16-10-2009 11:02 | Iraq | Migration | Terror War | World

The first deportation to Baghdad deported around forty people early on Thursday the 15th October on a specially chartered plane provided by Air Italy . We have since learnt that ten of the detained people were taken off the flight in Baghdad while the other detainees were not accepted by the Iraqi government and were flown back to detention in the UK. A Home Office statement has said they will "iron out" the difficulties they faced and "expect to carry out another flight".

Campaign Against Air Italy

15-10-2009 10:16 | Migration | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

There has been a steady increase in the number of charter flights by UKBA to remove those who have failed to be recognized as refugees from the UK

There does not seem to be a fixed contract with any one air line, each charter flight seems to have a different carrier.

NCADC suspect that this is a deliberate policy by UKBA to try and prevent Anti-Deportation protesters, from targetting airlines.

Evaluation of noborder camp in Lesvos, Greece

06-10-2009 09:57 | Migration | World

The infopoint
This summer saw two major bordercamps, one at the northwest of the Schengen-country, in Calais, France and one at its southern edge on the island lesvos, Greece. Many migrants who first arrived and were detained in Greece made their way to Calais, trying to reach the UK. A part from their obvious political purpose, both bordercamps became convergence spaces were activists and migrants shared experiences. This raised new questions and conflicts, but also brought some ideas how political and social struggles could be made to merge. Here is an evaluation of the Lesvos border camp by transact from October 2009.

Shut down Pagani! Azadi*! An evaluation of the no border camp in Lesvos

06-10-2009 06:37 | Analysis | Migration | Social Struggles | World

Never before have we experienced a noborder camp on the outer borders of the EU at which political protests and social struggles for the freedom of movement were as intertwined as they were in Lesvos. International press coverage about the detention centre at Pagani was considerable and we return with many new impulses for transnational networking. Even if meetings were characterised by strong disagreements, our evaluation of Lesvos is overwhelmingly positive.(1)
