Speak Out For ESOL

Just before the official opening of the new detention boats in Zaandam, The Netherlands, around 90 activists made a start opening the fences with bold cutters. The ministry of justice plans to take in use this month the 300 two-person cells for detention of 'illegal migrants'. The barbed wire and 150 meters of fencing were dismantled with bold cutters, spanners and wire cutters.

Today in seven UK cities including Nottingham and Leicester, the Congolese community and their supporters held demonstrations to focus attention on government plans to categorise the 'Democratic' Republic of Congo as a 'safe' country to return people who have been fleeing the violence to the UK in search of security. In Nottingham people rallied and marched, highlighting that the Congolese who have already been deported face a very uncertain fate.

In an extra ordinary art performance artist Mark McGowan and the comedian Aaron Barschak are to burn an effigy of Liam Byrne the Minister of State for Immigration and MP for Hodge Hill, Birmingham, in a protest against the deportation of asylum seekers to area's such as the Congo, Zimbabwe, Darfur, Iran and Afghanistan, to name but a few. The event is to take place this Saturday 31st March at 12.30am in Birmingham New Street at the junction with Needless Alley, just outside Starbucks.

Formally, Adolf Hitler is still an honorary citizen of Bad Doberan. He was elevated to this status by town officials in 1932.. Prior to the NSDAP coming to power here, Bad Doberan had been the first municipality to grant Hitler this title.

Heiligendamm, where this year's G8 summit will be convened, belongs to the administrative district of Bad Doberan. The two towns are connected by the Lindenallee (Lime Tree Avenue), which Hitler once praised as "the most beautiful of Germany". The Dammchaussee ('Dam Road'), the road leading into the Lindenallee, was subsequently renamed 'Adolf-Hitler-Strasse' (Adolf Hitler Street).

85 Sri Lankan asylum seekers were rescued by the HMAS Success last week and taken to the new high security detention facility on Christmas Island. Pamela Curr, from the Melbourne based Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, said "The Australian government must now abide by its signature to the Convention on Refugees and access these peoples claims fairly. They must not be transported to Nauru so that Australia can avoid giving them access to legal advice and refugee processing."
