SOCPA - brian haw's full display rises like a pheonix

next monday at horseferry road, judge purdy hands down his decision whether brian haw has a case to answer for alleged breach of socpa conditions that led to a night-time police raid by 78 officers in may 2006 cutting his display from more than forty metres down to a mere three. in the meantime, artist mark wallinger has been busy recreating the whole display and his exhibition entitled 'state britain' opened this morning at tate britain, on the very edge of the socpa zone.

a press release tomorrow will reveal the exact nature of marc wallinger's new installation at the duveen gallery, tate britain. meanwhile the organisers are angry at a leak to the sunday times which was published this morning under the title 'tate puts artistic bomb under blair.

Radio 4 is running a Christmas Repeal listener vote, and the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA) is one of the candidates. Steve Pound, Labour MP, was on the Today programme this morning talking a load of bull about SOCPA, but he was forced to admit that Maya Evans and Milan Rai should not have been convicted under the Act. This jolted me out of my apathy to go and vote and to send a comment to Today (below).

SOCPA - brian haw - day three

at marylebone court today, the defence barrister completed his submission to have the proceedings stopped on the basis that brian haw has no case to answer. judge purdy told the court that he had a lot of case law to study and would adjourn until the new year. a date of 22nd january has been set for the decision.

in a fine performance this afternoon, brian's defence barrister made a submission for the magistrate to throw it out of court on the basis that there is no case to answer. the result of this should be settled in the morning.

parliament square protestor, brian haw, was at marylebone magistrates court today facing criminal charges arising earlier in the year for alleged breach of conditions imposed on his demo. as an 'organiser' he could face a custodial sentence. the case is set to last three days and supporters are welcome - there is a public gallery.

tomorrow evening, supporters of brian haw will mark the 2000th day of his vigil outside parliament. his remarkable five-year-plus protest has suffered harrassment, legal challenges, violence, and every weather condition imaginable, but brian still stands up to all, and continues to remind parliament every day of the terrible outcomes of their decisions to terrorise innocent children in iraq and afghanistan.

a brave and concerned group of public-minded citizens today helped to patrol the government's designated zone and prevent unauthorised demonstrations near parliament. they scanned passers-by and marked anyone thought to be prone to political outbursts.

SOCPA - report and a few pics from 'no more fallujahs' demo today

who lies
around a hundred protesters took part in today's demonstration which began at midday with a reading of names of the dead of both british troops and iraqi civilians in the iraq occupation. police arrested five people during the afternoon, but at eleven this evening, the majority of people and twenty seven tents remain.

Tents abound. Never in the field of Parliament Square have so many been arrested by so few. What happened to the 800 police this time? While I was there they were only arresting people who refused to give name and address but those who did give ID could expect a summons.
