EDF gets green light to trash 400 acres of greenfield land in Somerset

07-08-2011 07:04

The land EDF plans to trash (D. Viesnik)
EDF Energy (the UK subsidiary of Electricite de France) has been granted permission by West Somerset District Council to trash over 400 of acres of beautiful greenfield coastal land at Hinkley Point, which sits within the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve, overlooking the Severn Estuary RAMSAR site.

EDF plans to uproot all the trees and vegetation, which provide important habitats for birds, bats, mammals and other precious flora and fauna. It also plans to dig up more soil and rock than was done for the preparation of the London 2012 Olympic site. And all of this before EDF has even submitted an application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission for its planned new nu-killer power station. But worry ye not, because EDF says that if it doesn't get permission to build its new nu-killer reactor (or if it changes its mind for economic or other reasons), then it will restore the land to its former glory.

Fracking Hell? What will shale gas mean for the UK?

22-07-2011 11:23

On Tuesday 19th July the Conway Hall was host to a public meeting on shale gas. With such a great list of speakers (Caroline Lucas, Kevin Anderson, Michael Meacher...) we decided it would be a shame not to record the meeting, so we did. The link is below - note that it is available to download as an MP3.

Breaking news: Police less than honest

19-07-2011 20:53

Inside Fortum & Masion
Monday saw the Crown Prosecution Service announce that charges would be dropped against 109 activists who occupied Fortnum & Mason on 26 March 2011. On Tuesday, 20 environmental activists had their convictions for attempting to shut down the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station overturned. As well as involving several activists from Oxford, these two cases had something else in common – blatant dishonesty from the police (or maybe the CPS – who can tell the difference?).

Breaking: Greenpeace Polar Bears occupy Cairn Energy HQ

18-07-2011 08:27

This morning about 50 polar bears have occupied the Edinburgh HQ of Cairn Energy. They are believed to be trying to find Cairn's elusive Arctic oil spill response plan.

Cairn is one of the companies spearheading attempts to extract fossil fuels from the arctic, region, despite the fact the ice caps are already melting as a result of fossil fuel use. Arctic extraction also involves drilling deep which has risks and the whole operation is likely to be catastrophic for wildlife and the environment.

‘Guerilla Ballet’ disrupts BP-sponsored opera event in Trafalgar Square

13-07-2011 23:21

Three ballet dancers interrupted BP’s third and final Summer Screen in Trafalgar Square[1], 30 minutes before the scheduled broadcast of the opera Cinderella began. The disturbance took the form of a short piece of dance based on Swan Lake [2], with the classic tale used as analogy for BP’s controversial investment in the Canadian tar sands [3],[4]. The performance featured the White Swan being smeared by an oily substance and suffocated with a cloth. The crowd of opera-lovers were very receptive, greeting the grand finale with applause and cheers.

Charlie Byers, who played the prince, explained: “The tar sands are one of the biggest threats to the future of our climate [5]; they are also destroying local communities and wildlife, trampling indigenous rights, and running Canada out of water and natural gas. It is a key time to pressure BP to withdraw, as the corporation has already substantially invested in the tar sands but will not start profiting for years to come.”

Did you know that the nuclear fallout in Fallujah is worse than in Hiroshima or Nagasaki? Brian Haw did. We start with a few words from the recently departed one man political protest. Then Chris Busby speaks on the dangers of radiation that authorities and the media conspire to cover up, and we hear from Jeff Donn about the real risks and radiation releases in US nuclear power stations. Our title feature, in hour 2, is a radio adaptation of the sombre and philosophical film, Into Eternity, about the Finnish efforts to build the world's first long term nuclear storage facility.
