Barclays 2012 AGM will be held at 11:00 (UK time) on Friday, 27 April at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Seems like a prime Target Barclays opportunity for Londoners.

There will be another Smash EDO, Brighton Jordan Valley Solidarity and Brighton and Hove PSC target Barclays demo outside Barclays in North Street, Brighton, this Saturday (the 28th) at 1pm.

Come along to make it as lively as the previous ones.

G4S loses its security contract with the European Parliament after complaints from 28 MEPs.

When Israeli troops reoccupied the West Bank in April 2002, they swept into Bethlehem, trapping 248 civilians, militants, priests, and nuns inside the Church of the Nativity for 40 days. Jiries Canavati, a Christian shopkeeper, was one of them. Returning to the Church, he retells the inside story of the harrowing struggle for survival under the Israeli military siege.

The Summer of Resistance is getting closer and now is the time to get involved.

The summer will start with a demo up at the factory at 12pm on the 1st of May.

The MoD has awarded Raytheon a new £60 million contract to replenish supplies of Paveway IV guided bombs to the British Army. EDO MBM (a unit of US arms dealers ITT Exelis) will manufacture the umbilical interconnect system and containers in Brighton. Paveway IV bombs have been used in Afghanistan and Libya and an earlier model of the Paveway was used in Iraq.

The MoD claims that this will sustain hundreds of jobs at the factories concerned (see  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-17597889).

Just a a quick reminder of some Smash EDO related events happening in the next few days.

Ed Greens, 21 year old musical artist & poet from Camden Town, London performed at the Hackney Picture House yesterday. The show premiered the music video to ‘Screaming Revolution’ by Empdy x Ed Greens. I caught up with brother Ed to ask a few questions, particularly, how he came to start making ‘active’ music and why Palestine is a common thread in his music.

The French Jewish school where three children and a teacher were murdered this month has received a wave of anti-Semitic hate mail and calls, the local prosecutor said Wednesday.

I've been on a concert tour in Europe, so far mostly in Great Britain, for the past month or so. There's nothing like being on tour to connect on a personal, face-to-face level with society, or at least the little subsets of society who come to my shows. Being a songwriter who writes songs about the Palestinian struggle, among other subjects, many of my shows around the world are organized by Palestine solidarity activists of one kind or another. Before the tour began I was getting occasional emails from people asking me whether I wanted to add my name to a group denunciation of jazz musician, blogger and author Gilad Atzmon. Denounce him for what, I asked. For being an anti-Semite, they replied. I'd then ask them to send me what he wrote that they found offensive, which they would then do (sometimes accompanied by an introductory essay explaining the distinction between anti-Zionsim and anti-Semitism). I'd then read every word, and each time, I'd fail to find the anti-Semitic bit. Then, ten days into my tour, the US Palestinian Community Network published a "Disavowal of the Racism and Antisemitism of Gilad Atzmon." Several of the signatories include Palestinian intellectuals and activists I know and admire.

During the last month Jordan Valley Solidarity, Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Smash EDO and students from Sussex university have held two very successful demos against Barclays' investments in Israel and the arms trade. We will return again this Saturday. Come along to Barclays, 139-142 North Street, Brighton on the 24th help us make this one a success!
