17-08-2004 01:13

The Hannah Baldock report in the Independent on the Venezuelan recall referendum, which stated that "The mid-morning results showed that the opposition, already boasting an enormous 1,758,000 votes to Chavez's 798,000, is well on its way to reaching the target of 3.76 million votes it needs to oust the authoritarian, left-wing President.", seems to have disappeared from the independent's web site. 17-08-2004 00:33

In 2002, film-makers in Venezuela reported on the fraudulent tactics of the opposition. Reports of violence coming out of Venezuela are unclear, but it is possible that, again, anti-Chavez forces are creating violent situations they can blame on Chavez.

Rumour: Carter and Gaviria of the OAS are fighting

16-08-2004 12:52

All depends on the Carter Center and the OAS. These groups are in frantic negotiations with the Coordinadora Democratica (opposition) right now. Rumour (I´ll confirm as soon as possible) is that Carter and Gaviria of the OAS are fighting. Carter apparently thinks that the vote ought to be accepted. Gaviria believes that some kind of "solution" should be sought in spite of the clear vote.

For Workers Revolution in Venezuela!

16-08-2004 04:12

“None of the countries of Latin America or the Pacific which are now under the domination of American imperialism to one degree or another is able either to attain complete freedom from foreign oppression or to retain such freedom for any length of time if it confines its struggle to the efforts of its own self. Only a union of the Latin American peoples, striving towards the goal of a united socialist America and allied in the struggle with the revolutionary proletariat of the United States, would present a force strong enough to contend successfully with North American imperialism.”
