Terrorizing Dissent - US Indymedia film about policing demo's

08-04-2009 11:09 | Globalisation | Indymedia | Social Struggles | World

If the policing concerned you at G20, have a look at what our American friends have to put up with and us before not too long.

Glass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, 'Terrorizing Dissent', an exposé of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets, 'Terrorizing Dissent' focuses on the story of dissent suppressed. People charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" speak out against the government's campaign to manipulate media coverage and label civil disobedience and community organizing as terrorism.

London Vigil for Tristan Anderson

18-03-2009 19:35 | Indymedia | Palestine | World

Banner

When I got to Kensington High Street at about 3.30, BS 280 was hassling the handful of attendees to cross the road to the 'designated area'. "Perhaps you can help me out," I said. "For years I've been trying to find out what law you use to dictate where we can practice our freedom of expression, and now you're about to tell me". Strangely enough, he couldn't. BS were very appropriate letters for his epaulettes. It wasn't very plausible -the side of the road he was trying to send us to has a narrower pavement and lots of shop doorways. Where we were, there was a railing behind our backs. He tried for a bit longer and then gave up.

Having got over the habitual hassle from cops, I reflected that irritating as the nursery school teacher persona that British bobbies habitually don at political events can be, they pale into insignificance when compared to the hassle that demonstrators face in other parts of the world. Like Ni'lin with its weekly protests against the wall, which has had four of its young people killed since July 2008, and where fellow IMCista and ISMer Tristan Anderson was hit in the face with a gas cannister on Friday March 13th. Tristan is now in a critical condition in an Israeli hospital, and it was in solidarity with him and the people of Palestine that we were stood around the corner from the Israeli Embassy.

05-02-2009 16:29 | Indymedia Server Seizure | Indymedia | Other Press | Technology | World

In the light of the excuses given for the recent Indymedia server seizer in Manchester, this story is highly relevant. In Italy, a rather disturbing prosecution is taking place. Indymedia refuses to be co-opted by the Knight Foundation

30-11-2008 19:35 | Indymedia | Technology | World

A $200,000 grant proposal, submitted by a group of Indymedia volunteers to the Knight News Challenge contest, has been blocked by other IMCs and subsequently dropped due to the abiding ethos that Indymedia is a counter to corporate, money-fiaxted media entities. The grant application to the Knight Foundation was to fund technical development work for Independent Media Centres (IMCs), also known as Indymedia, and has caused much controversy within the global network. The debate has encapsulated, once again, the thorny issue of how to sustain radical projects without compromising that radicalism by accepting tainted money.

Why I Moved From Seattle Washington

06-11-2008 05:45 | Globalisation | Indymedia | Social Struggles | World

The Destroyed Reputation of The United States Federal Government (Part Two)

I lived in Seattle Washington for 15 years. I worked on computer automated design and drafting for twenty years. My life "fell apart" (yes; - there was mushrooms, a woman, and a brother involved - to add some drama for you!) . I ended up living in my truck and couch surfing with friends for about ten months. Then I got a low rent transitional housing apartment in downtown Seattle - at the Glenn Hotel.

01-07-2008 13:37 | G8 Japan 2008 | Globalisation | Indymedia | World

Last night (June 27), three Hong Kong citizen journalists who have
been registered with the Citizens' Media Center (Sapporo) were
detained by Immigration, and were on the verge of being deported.
This morning, Susan George (ATTAC France) was stopped and questioned
at the airport. Ms George is 74 years old, and her detention
