At the Anglo-French summit held at Arsenal Emirates Football Stadium on Thursday 27th April, protesters asked French President Sarkozy to kick French Total Oil out of Burma. President Sarkozy has previously told Total not to make further investment in Burma, but Total currently funds the brutal military regime with over 500 million dollars a year. In December it upgraded its offshore gas platform whilst asking its corrupt military partners for a maritime exclusion zone around the platform.

CIPO-RFM are a pressure group campaining for the rights of indiginous people in Oaxaca which is Mexicos poorest state. They were part of the APPO uprising in 2006 and have a long history of struggle against the corrupt Mexican political establishment. For a basic intro (In English) about who they are see this page:
http://www.nodo50.org/cipo/ourstory.htm Indymedia coverage here:
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/01/303427.html http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/02/305490.html As a result of their work many of their activists are in prison on false and trumped up charges. Nowhere is the state repression of CIPO-RFM more acutely felt than in the remote village of San Isidro Aloapam where men and women have been murdered by paramilitaries supporting an American logging company who are trying to cut down their local forest. Other villagers have been detained and imprisoned by corrupt Police supporting the local establishment. At the the end of last year two London based IMC UK volunteers visited San Isidro to report on the situation. After many months of translating our findings from both Spanish and Zapatec we will shortly be publishing our material on this newswire. WATCH THIS SPACE....
In the meantime there will be a benefit gig for CIPO-RFM prisoners in London on April 16th. Details below. See you there.

Jack Straw announced plans to replace SOCPA sections 132-138, which ban spontaneous demonstrations around Parliament, and make it a criminal offence to demonstrate with police permission - to get maximum positive PR from the ever compliant press, Straw only announced the repeal now, while the need for new laws was hidden in the small print. One battle may soon be over, the struggle continues on the streets.
We are meeting at 1pm at the roundabout on the South side of Trafalgar Square on Saturday 5th April. Come with your mates and discuss with them what you want to do with the day. Bring placards, banners, whistles or anything else you can think of. Let them know you won’t be easily silenced.

Four activists held a demonstration outside the Wallace Collection art gallery at Hertford House, Manchester Square, London on Wednesday 19th March. The Art Gallery is currently considering a sponsorship deal with Total so the activists were asking them not to accept sponsorship from the largest western sponsor of the brutal Burma junta. A boycott is not yet called for as it is hoped the gallery will do the right thing and not become associated by Total with oppression in Burma.

Since February 2007, the London Guantánamo Campaign has been holding a weekly vigil outside the US Embassy in Mayfair. At 6-7pm at the start of every weekend, come rain or shine, we’ve been there, supported by many individuals and groups over the past 14 months, to call on the American government to shut down Guantánamo Bay and other illegal jails in the “war on terror” and to respect human rights and the rule of law. The message is simple: no torture, no detention without trial!
