in november 1995, nigerian writer and activist, ken saro-wiwa, and 8 of his colleagues were executed by the military regime for campaigning against the devastation of the niger delta by oil multi-national shell. yesterday, demonstrators dropped nine nooses infront of the shell uk headquarters on the south bank to highlight the anniversary and highlight the current struggle on the north west of ireland, where shell is set to transform a remote conservation area into an environmental disaster zone with public health and safety implications.

Five brave men

We spent this years holiday blockading Shell in Co Mayo. Here's my personal report. Please support the Mayo people in their resistance to Shell.

‘Nigeria 3 miles’ said the sign by the T junction, so we knew we were on the right road as we travelled through the massive expanse of bogland that covers most of the north of County Mayo. We had gone over from the UK to spend a few days supporting the Shell to Sea campaign and to learn more about Shell’s refinery and pipeline plans directly from the local people.

The Imprisoned Rossport 5
On Tuesday, the 29th June, 2005, in Dublin, Ireland, 5 farmers from Rossport, Co. Mayo,Ireland were sent to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin, for violating an order imposed by the High Court to stop blocking Shell access to their lands to constuct the onshore section of the Corrib Gas Field pipeline.

The men have appeared in Court several times since that date and have been asked whether or not they wish to purge their contempt and agree to obeying the injunction,a request the have flatly refused on each occasion.

A Nationwide campaign of Boycotts,Blockades,Pickets,Fundraisers,Large -Scale Demos,Occupations and sit-ins,Solidarity gatherings as well as a permanent activist camp and blockade at the remote site of the proposed pipeline has exploded in Ireland since the men's jailing.
