The Struggle Against Shell in Ireland
Rossport Solidarity Camp speaking tour

Oil multinational Shell plans to bring untreated natural gas through an experimental pipeline to an onshore refinery near Rossport in County Mayo. Local people are opposing the development, concerned that the pipeline, running within 70m of houses, is unsafe, and that the refinery will pollute
water supplies and fishing grounds This summer, the local campaign has been supported by a protest camp of Irish and international direct activists.

The campaign against the pipeline won international attention after five local landowners, aka 'The Rossport Five', were jailed for refusing to obey an injunction forbidding them from preventing Shell contractors access to
their land. After 3 months in prison, they were released when Shell lifted the injunction in September.

Shell's building work has been stopped for most of this year by continual picketing of construction sites and a variety of solidarity actions across Ireland and beyond, but the battle is far from over. As the Rossport Five said on their release, 'The campaign has now begun in earnest.'

Two participants in Rossport Solidarity Camp will be speaking about the campaign in Oxford on November 9th, one of them will also be speaking about Cork Harbour Action Group's struggle against the construction of an incinerator in County Cork.

When: Wednesday 9th November 7.30pm

Where: Oxford Action Resource Centre (OARC) – upstairs at East Oxford Community Centre, Cowley Road (corner of Princes Street)
