In what the author is describing as 'the biggest anarchist insurrection he has seen since Claremont Road, and the Albanian insurrection' the entire periphery of the small neighbourhood of Exarchia in central Athens has been effectively sealed off from Police forces. Barricades are up in the streets and forces stand ready to repel the police!

Somalia: Another CIA-backed coup blows up

04-12-2008 13:15 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

The United States has lost the ground war in Somalia, but that doesn't mean its geopolitical objectives have changed one iota. The US intends to stay in the region for years to come and use its naval power to control the critical shipping lanes from the Gulf of Aden. The growing strength of the Somali national resistance is a set-back, but it doesn't change the basic game-plan. The pirates are actually a blessing in disguise. They provide an excuse for the administration to beef up it's military presence and put down roots. Every crisis is an opportunity.

Dawood Ebrahim.
There appears to be a stalemate on India's demand to extradite nearly 20 terrorists it believes are responsible for attacks on India from time to time. Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari says these people will be tried in Pakistan, if India provides enough evidence.

Vigilant Shield 09: A Cover for Illegal Domestic Operations?

03-12-2008 18:55 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | World

Launched by President Bush in 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11,
2001 terrorist attacks, NORTHCOM has been mired in controversy since its
creation. Among its more dubious accomplishments were illegal domestic
spying operations in conjunction with the Pentagon's shadowy Counter
Intelligence Field Activity unit (CIFA) that targeted antiwar activists.

Despite CIFA's shut-down and the alleged dismantling of its TALON
database (now incorporated into the FBI's Guardian Threat Tracking
System), SourceWatch revealed that "in accordance with intelligence
oversight requirements, the DoD will maintain a record copy of the collected
data." One can't help but wonder whether that "record copy" of TALON
somehow migrated into a NORTHCOM database.

What Are You Doing About It? 7 Years of Guantánamo

03-12-2008 17:35 | Repression | Terror War | World

The LGC is currently putting together its actions for January 2009 to mark the seventh anniversary of Guantánamo Bay opening up. It’s a real shame that it has come to this: that seven years later, Guantánamo Bay and other secret, illegal jails where people are held arbitrarily (imagine being locked up in a dark, narrow box for years on end with no end in sight…) and subjected to horrific psychological and physical torture are still up and running. What does it say about the state of the world and humanity in our day and our age? As the world moves towards celebrating sixty years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December this year, will they be celebrating at Guantánamo Bay, Bagram, Abu Ghraib and elsewhere?

India's 9/11. Who was Behind the Mumbai Attacks?

01-12-2008 17:40 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Terror War | World

The Mumbai terror attacks were part of a carefully planned and coordinated
operation involving several teams of experienced and trained gunmen.

The operation has the fingerprints of a paramilitary-intelligence operation.
According to a Russian counter terrorist expert, the Mumbai terrorists "used
the same tactics that Chechen field militants employed in the Northern
Caucasus attacks where entire towns were terrorized, with homes and
hospitals seized".

China and the Congo Wars: AFRICOM. America's New Military Command

27-11-2008 22:56 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

Just weeks after President George W. Bush signed the Order creating a new US military command dedicated to Africa, AFRICOM, events on the mineral-rich continent have erupted which suggest a major agenda of the incoming Obama Presidency will be for the son of a black Kenyan to focus US resources, military and other, on dealing with the Republic of Congo, the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea, the oil-rich Darfur region of southern Sudan and increasingly the Somali ‘pirate threat’ to sea lanes in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. The legitimate question is whether it is mere coincidence that Africa appears just at this time to become a new geopolitical ‘hot spot’ or whether it has a direct link to the formal creation of AFRICOM.

Somalia: The Specter of Detrimental Trusteeship

20-11-2008 08:14 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Terror War | World

Somalia, invaded and occupied by Ethiopia with the encouragement of the
United States, is now to be reduced to a "trusteeship" of Addis Ababa, the
aggressor. "This is a case of putting the fox in charge of the barn so that
he may teach the chicken how to function in an orderly manner!" Those
Somalis that choose to recognize Ethiopia's authority will be targeted by
the resistance, deepening conflicts in that wounded society. That may be
Ethiopia's intention. "Ethiopia is set to discredit any vestige of
nationalist leadership and to spread violence and hate."

Obama's Intelligence Agenda

18-11-2008 18:24 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | World

While expectations may be high that the incoming Obama administration will
reverse many of the worst features of the Bush regime--from warrantless
wiretapping, illegal detention, torture, "targeted assassinations" and
preemptive war--now that the cheering has stopped, expect more of the same.

According to The Wall Street Journal [1], "President-elect Barack Obama is
unlikely to radically overhaul controversial Bush administration
intelligence policies, advisers say, an approach that is almost certain to
create tension within the Democratic Party."

Miscarriage of Justice: Who was behind the October 2002 Bali bombings?

14-11-2008 13:36 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | World

The 2002 Bali bomb attacks contributed to swaying Australian public opinion in favor of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, while also weakening the anti-war protest movement. In the wake of the 2002 Bali attack, the Australian government "officially" joined the US-led "war on terrorism." It not only used the Bali bombings as a pretext to fully integrate the US-UK military axis, it also used the attacks as a pretext to implement drastic police measures including "ethnic profiling" directed against its own citizens.
