We are writing to introduce the Solidarity Without Borders Campaign, a
coordinated, sustained, three-pronged campaign in solidarity with
immigrant and indigenous struggles across North and Latin America.

The repression has included all the critical and urban sectors of Ciudad Juarez, from the curfew against minors, outside any lawful order and despite the opposition of the families of young people; the assault of the residents of the Colonia Lomas de Poleo by the state and the Zaragoza brothers [one of the richest and most powerful families of the Ciudad Juarez oligarchy, also suspected of involvement in the “femicides”. They are one of the owners of the Corona Beer Company so BOYCOTT CORONA BEER!, translator notes] who have made an illegal claim to the land where the “colonos” (residents) live, and now the harassment and imprisonment of the compañeros of collective and social organizations.

Schoolteachers affiliated to the Sección 22 branch of the education union SNTE (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores en Educación) - the main protagonists behind the Oaxaca revolt of 2006 - have occupied a secondary school in eastern Oaxaca under the control of the Sección 59 scab union branch.

In the summer of 2006, a broad-based, non-violent, popular uprising exploded in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Some compared it to the Paris Commune, while others called it the first Latin American revolution of the 21st century.

At a press conference in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas today two peace groups condemned recent threats against international observers in Zapatista communities and produced video evidence of some of the threats.

Mexican Government forces continue their attacks against unarmed Zapatista support bases with the shooting, beating and imprisonment of a father and son near Palenque in the lowland region of Chiapas.

The Zapatistas are facing military and paramilitary mobilizations against the autonomous communities. The situation is critical and no one is watching!

Chiapanecan authorities announce plan to evict Zapatista camp at the Huitepec.

From 20-22 December the indigenous organisation 'las Abejas' held a gathering at the place where ,10 years ago, 49 of their members were massacred by paramilitaries armed and backed by the Mexican state (21 women, 15 children, 9 men, 4 unborn babies).

At the moment the group radiozapote is threatened with eviction, right at the start of the vacational period in the school - being propitious for it the decision to impose a new director of the ENAH, compatible to the interests of the director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, Alfonso de Maria y Campos.

Today Monday 10th December demonstrators blockaded both the Mexican Embassy and Mexican Consulate in London, in solidarity with the Zapatistas and in opposition to the attacks on their communities by the state and paramilitaries.

Movement for Justice in el Barrio, a New York based (mainly Latino migrant) community organisation fighting against gentrification through direct-democracy, and fighting capitalism as adherents of the Zapatista's Other Campaign, want to tour the UK in 2008.

They want to meet with and exchange stories and lessons with anti-gentrification groups, anti-capitalist groups and migrant groups here and begin planning actions against their main enemy, their London based landlord.

Some UK based organisations are up for making this happen, but we need more help.

"Move into the Light?: Postscript to a turbulent 2007"

At the beginning of 2007, the Turbulence collective commissioned 14 articles from around the global 'movement of movements', asking authors: "What would it mean to win?" We edited their responses into a newspaper and printed 7,000 copies, most of which were distributed at the mobilisation against the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, in June. A few months later, we want to return to the question of winning.

As we resume our search it's no surprise that we keep coming across the problem of visibility. When we think about winning, our eyes are drawn to things that are highly visible or easy-to-measure, such as institutional or legislative change, the opening of a social centre or an increase in membership. That's where the light is. But we also need to assess victories in the less tangible though just as real realm of possibilities. Winning in this realm may involve increased potential, changes in perception or patterns of behaviour. Yet these seem to exist at the very edge of the luminous zone.

This problem leads into another: our experiences create their own luminosity and consequently their own areas of darkness. When we think about winning we are drawn to movements, people and events that are familiar to us; and we have expectations about how things should turn out if they are to constitute a victory.

So how can we overcome our night-blindness once we move beyond the familiar?...
