The Peace Cycle began as a completely new initiative in 2004, and the inaugural ride that year proved to be a great success, making national headlines in almost every country it passed through. Whilst numbers fluctuated across the whole route, some 25 cyclists from around the globe reached Jerusalem together, in solidarity with one another and with all those working for a just peace in Israel and Palestine.

The group of cyclists included people whose ages ranged from 12 to 60, whose faiths included Muslim, Jewish, Christian and none, and whose nationalities included British, Irish, Swiss, German, American, Australian, Italian, Swedish, Greek, Palestinian and Israeli –
what united them all was their belief in a just peace.

One cyclist, Rebecca Tyrer (who has stayed on to work in the West Bank) proudly quoted, “There were so many times when I thought I wouldn’t make it, but we did it! More to the point people are still talking about us and everything we still represent. I think one of the most powerful aspects of The Peace Cycle for me was our reception in Palestine.”

Another cyclist, Khurram Yaqoob recalls The Peace Cycle 2004 as being, “… a great journey of adventure, self-realisation and tears. Be prepared for a fantastic challenge as you pass through a variety of countries on your bike! I mean, you are actually using your own energy and a metal contraption to travel to the other side of the globe!”This feature length film, narrated by acclaimed actress Julie Christie, follows their amazing physical and emotional journey - a journey which is to be repeated by more cyclists in 2006!

The Zapatistas have announced the resumption of broadcasting by their own radio station, Radio Insurgente, including transmissions over the internet. The new way of operating involves the zapatista grass-roots civilian structures taking over control of the FM broadcasts to the indigenous communities.

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México, January 6th 2005. - The woman who had the command of the taking of the city of San Cristobal on the 1st of January 1994, died this morning 6th of January 2006.

The Fray Bartholomew de Las Casas Centre for Human Rights in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico, reports a serious attack on a human rights activist in the city. The man who was attacked is, among other activities, involved in “The Other Campaign”, initiated by the Zapatistas. The Fray Bartholomew Centre write:

The Zapatistas began today the first of a series of town-hall like meetings that will comprise the bulk of a six-month nationwide caravan dubbed as the Other Campaign. The campaign will touch every state in Mexico and aspires to form a wide-ranging non-electoral and anti-capitalist alliance that can be a powerful enough of a force to implement a new constitution for Mexico.

On january the 1th 2006 the zapatistas started the "Other Campaign" with a 20.000 people demonstration in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
The "Other Campaign" means trying to establish a political counterweight to the ruling class in Mexico - and the world by forming an anarchist network of groups and individuals from below, worldwide...

Indigenous people are making important advances in their autonomy in the zone of Morelia, in Chiapas, Mexico. The most important aspects in the development of autonomy have been health, education, production and the situation of women, say the Zapatistas.

As previously reported on Indymedia Scotland and Indymedia UK, plagiarised though of BBC world news, Subcommandante Marcos from the EZLN in Chiapas, Mexico, wrote an invitation for a solidarity football game to Inter Milan.
Now the solidarity group B.A.S.T.A. Reports on Indymedia Germany that Inter Milan would have accepted the challenge, however, not yet detemining the time and location of the match.

The captain of Inter Milan football club says he would be willing to take up an invitation for the club to play a team of Mexican Zapatista rebels.

The Italian club have received a letter from the indigenous movement, based in the southern state of Chiapas.
