Norwich-A group of around 25 activists from a broad colition of Anarchists,Socialists,Greens ,Trade Unionists and local people, including a vocal member of Unities' Cambridge branch today protested today against the governments workfare program, which forces jobseekers to work up to eight weeks unpaided and without receiving the minimum wage of £6.19 an hour.

It’s Official: UK Government’s Workfare Programme is Illegal Forced Labour

The UK Government’s controversial Back to Work programme, deemed workfare by critics, received a bloody nose this week as all but one of the WorkFare schemes were found to compel a person’s labour and deemed illegal by the Court of Appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice. Though not an ultimate victory, this ruling sends a clear signal to the UK government that the public might not be willing to surrender their social contract without a fight after all.

After handing leaflets outside Poundland the demonstration moves onto Argos where protesters occupy the store and handout over a thousand leaflets and only leave once the busy Christmas queues have completely disappeared. This is followed by a brief visit to Superdrug before finishing the demonstration outside McDonalds where Food not Bombs gave away free vegan burgers

Saturday 8th December was the start of a week of action against Workfare, in Birmingham protesters from Boycott Workfare, Birmingham Against the Cuts, Disabled People Against the Cuts, Anonymous Birmingham and Birmingham Food not Bombs gathered outside Poundland, a local company using Workfare. The groups we’re also joined by protesters coming from the nearby UK Uncut Starbucks action where Starbucks were targeted for not paying tax.[1]
