Belgium: Borsbeek Forest Occupation Eviction Threat

After three weeks of logging of oaks and piecemeal evictions of treehouses in Borsbeek Fortress III action camp, many trees are still standing. The forest is being destroyed because they are in the way of Antwerp Airport, a small business airport which wants to upgrade and allow for larger planes to land. GroenFront! has occupied the forest, a habitat of endangered bats, to prevent it's destruction. A larger scale eviction is expected for this coming Monday (Aug. 28th)
Over the past three weeks activists have been delaying the 'forest maintenance' significantly by chaining themselves to barricades or the logger's machinery and by occupying trees using walkways, platforms and swings.

One year after Katrina, Gothenburg Critical Mass

A small but determined group gathered in Gothenburg on Friday evening to remember the victims of climate change. Not only was this the last Friday in the month, it was also the day one year ago when the storm Katrina that devastated New Orleans reached hurricane force. Gothenburg was one of 28 Critical Masses around the world where this was remembered.

The double-whammy of peak oil and climate change have recently become much more mainstream, but the (if you’ll pardon the expression) ‘roadmap’ to a sustainable future is still very sketchy. Of course our governments are still too focussed on unsustainable growth of an oil-based economy to do anything much about either issue. But there’s little point in waiting for them to sort it out, when there’s so many positive ideas and capacity for real change to be found at the community and grassroots level.

Mass callout to help build the climate camp

We are calling for all people who can to arrive in Leeds from Monday August 21 and head to the Common Place, 23-25 Wharf Street, Leeds LS2 7EQ. This is to build all the infrastructure ready to occupy the site. This is a mammoth task and the more people we have the more infrastructure is ready when we occupy the site and the less has to be built there. No DIY knowledge is needed as the highly skilled site practicalities group will be there to make sure everything goes smoothly!
