Quick Report

27.08.2006 16:56

The camp has gotten off to a great start. The site was taken without any hitches in a nightime operation that worked well. Over the next few days more people arrived to help set up and it opened officially on Saturday.

The infrastructure is working well, with compost toilets, recycling, and grey water systems in place. Solar and wind power onsite as well. And several kitchens serving great food.

People are volunteering to help with many of the tasks needed to help make the site work, from welcoming visitors, to washing up.

There's been a good number of local residents touring the site, some keen to talk about their views on climate change and drax power station inparticular.

Mainstream media interest was strong on the first day with seven media crews getting a tour of the site, and several positive TV news reports airing on BBC, SKY and the local news.

Relations with the police at the camp have for the most part been cordial. There are police from all over the country here in the area, with hundreds on standby. The local force is a lot more friendly than some of the visiting forces however!

More later...
