Yes, the Israel lobby seeks to silence opponents of Israeli Apartheid. All the more need for trade unionists to break that silence by speaking out against Israeli military occupation, for the right of Palestinian refugees to return, and for the elimination of apartheid throughout historic Palestine.

US President George W Bush addressed the nation yesterday, delivering a moving speech about the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Extracts reproduced below, with interpretation [in square brackets].

Five years into the war in Iraq, the primary source of instability is the continuing presence of U.S. troops. Iraqi public opinion and attack statistics strongly indicate that more than 80 per cent of the violence is directly or indirectly attributable to the U.S. military occupation. It follows that a ceasefire predicated on a decisive U.S. withdrawal of all troops and bases will actually help stabilize the country.

Sen. John McCain plans at least one campaign event on his week-long congressional trip to Europe and the Middle East: a March 20 fundraiser in London.
