The front page of www.indymedia.org.uk now features a promoted newswire in addition to the open newswire. You can choose between the two. The addition of a promoted newswire is an attempt to keep the balance between our commitment to open publishing and to our aims as stated in the UK Indymedia Mission Statement. We hope that this change will keep everyone happy:
- Promoted wire for those who want to read UK Indymedia as "the journal of the movement"
- All regions for those who want a collection of local news
- open newswire for those who want a running commentary by everyone who cares to post (as long as the posts are within the Editorial Guidelines)

Nottm Community Print Resources are Go

Following an earlier Indymedia appeal for storage, a location for Nottingham's Community Print Resource has been found at the Asbo Community Centre at 33-35 Burns Street, 1 Wildman Street, Arboretum. There is now an urgent call out for help in setting up the facilities, starting (during the ASBO open day) on Saturday 19th November.
Please call by from 2pm (til possibly 7pm) to check it out.

There are a variety of groups and individuals working within the IMC UK framework to produce radio programs. Indymedia Radio London produce an hour long show broadcast in London by Resonance FM every Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm. In the past they have mobilised to provide streaming coverage from the IMC set up for DSEi2003. Another regular show available online and broadcast on Resonance FM is Slow Small Peasants with audio landscapes on social and ecological justice every Friday 2-3pm. The show evolved out of Diversity Radio which disseminated the diverse views of participants and others during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002. They also covered the (COP6) Convention on Biological Diversity.
rampART radio was born when a studio was created at the rampART social centre in September 2004 as part of media production facilities aimed at providing independent media coverage during the London European Social Forum held in October. When the ESF finished the station continued, adding a variety of regular live programs, and putting out daily news and events listings. rampART radio will shortly celebrate it's first birthday but has been considering proposals to de-brand the station and concentrate on building up and strengthening a wider radio network collaboration.
Nottinghamshire (Notts) Indymedia born in cyberspace!

After Birmingham, Notts Indymedia is now IMC UK's new baby. With the website live, there's nothing stopping the new and enthusiastic collective, itching to get the project going. For years it was felt that Nottinghamshire could really do with a open, independent and community-orientated media space. Well, now it has finally arrived.
Notts Indymedia produced a short film about the G8 Justice Ministers meeting in Sheffield, back in July. It can be downloaded here. There are plans to open a media centre in the city and various other film projects are in the pipeline.
Solidarity Page: Imc Bristol Server Seizure

On 27 June 2005, the server of IMC Bristol was seized under a search warrant (police and criminal evidence act). One IMC Bristol volunteer was arrested on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage and bailed the same day. Six months later, in December 2005, the volunteer was informed that he would not be charged.

Westcountry Indymedia Is Closed

For quite a while now West Country Indymedia has had no active collective taking care of its newswire or creating features. For quite a while it has seemed sensible at this stage to simply disable West Country IMC until a new collective comes forward willing to take responsibility for maintaining it.

Indymedia Bristol Server Seized by Police

On Monday, June 27th, Indymedia Bristol's server was seized by the police. An Indymedia volunteer was also arrested during the raid on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage. Last week, police demanded access to the server to gain the IP details of a posting. The alternative media outlet is receiving advice from civil liberties organisations and the NUJ. Before being legally forced to hand over the server, Indymedia Bristol stated: "We do not intend to voluntarily hand over information to the police as they have requested". Bristol Indymedia see the seizure of their server and the arrest of one of their volunteers as an attack on the freedom of speech. A further statement from Bristol Indymedia volunteers is expected soon.This is the second time that law enforcement authorities have attacked Indymedia servers in the UK in the run up to a major event. Last October, just prior to the European Social Forum, Indymedia servers in London were seized in an international law enforcement operation - prompting a wave of protests and solidarity statements from a wide range of organisations [report]. This time, events are unfolding one week before the G8 Summit begins in Scotland.

On Monday, June 27th, Indymedia Bristol's server was seized by the police. An Indymedia volunteer was arrested during the raid on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage. He is now on bail. See Indymedia Bristol Statement (28th June 05):
"We are outraged at the actions of the police. They have completely disabled the entire Bristol Indymedia news service. By their actions they have undermined the principle of open publishing and free access to the media, thereby removing people's opportunity to read and report their own news. This situation has serious implications for anyone providing a news service on the Internet. We do not intend to let this stop us from continuing the project."

Alternative Servers Attacked: "Not a Private Question: A Question of Privacy"

Italy-based non-profit community webserver autistici have found out that the authorities have copied the keys necessary for the decryption of their webmail a year ago [statement 1 | 2]. Since then, the authorities potentially had access to all the data on the disks. Autistici's provider did not inform them about this. Apparently, this is connected to the same investigation as the one that caused an international law enforcement operation in London last October: A few days before the European Social Forum, Indymedia servers in London were seized, prompting a wave of solidarity statements [report].

Birmingham Indymedia finally went live as part of the UK Indymedias United Kollektives on May 1st 2005. Birmingham DiY Indymedia aims to empower people within Birmingham and beyond to realise their voices through community news.
You can upload your news in the form of written reports, photos, audio and video. Just go to the 'publish your news' in the top right hand corner of the site to upload your news or click the 'make a quick comment' at the end of an article.

Indymedia, together with other grass roots and alternative media groups are preparing for the G8 2005 Summit in Scotland in July. Several physical IMC centres are being planned to facilitate DIY reporting of the events around the G8.
Want to get involved? Have equipment you can lend or donate? Get in touch and find out more on the info page for the G8 Independent Media Convergence event. The convergence was held at the Institute for Autonomy social centre in London 14-15th May.

Indymedia UK 5th Birthday

Mayday 05 marks the 5th anniversary of Indymedia UK. The first IMC to take off outside the US, it launched amidst the media hysteria around the Mayday 2000 protests. Indymedia UK developed into the United Kollectives with the launch of the current mir code
based website in 2003, and continues to grow with the launch of Birmingham IMC this Mayday and Nottingham IMC due to launch soon (see also birthday party in london, 15th May).
A big thanks to everyone involved in contributing towards Indymedia! Without reports from the streets, and the voluntary effort of people contributing online and offline to the project, Indymedia would be nothing.

Middle East Film Festival

Indymedia London is organising a five day long Middle East film festival. Starting on Tuesday 26 until Saturday 30 of April, the festival will include films and talks form and about Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel and more.
The festival is at RampART Creative Centre, Rampart Street, London E1. Events will start from 7pm each evening on Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th, and from 5pm Saturday 30th. It will include presentations by solidarity groups, international activists, film-makers, music, and food.
PROGRAMME:
TUESDAY 26th: MEDIA DISTORTION - 'Planet Of The Arabs' and main feature 'Control Room' a documentary on Al-Jazeera's coverage of the US/Iraq war.
WEDNESDAY 27th: IRAQ - 'The Oil Factor'
THURSDAY 28TH: LEBANON & AFGHANISTAN - film by Indymedia Beirut and 'Afghan Massacre'.
FRIDAY 29TH: PALESTINE/ISRAEL - 'The Sun Doesn't Shine In The Camp' a documentary on life in Balata Refugee Camp filmed by international activists and Palestinians. Followed by 'Gaza Strip'.

G8 Alternative Media Convergence, London, May 14/15

Indymedia UK and the Institute For Autonomy are currently preparing for an international alternative media convergence in London on May 14 and 15. The convergence is set to bring the alternative reporting machine up to speed for non-corporate media corverage of the G8 summit in Scotland.
In the spirit of a project declared by the Zaptistas in 1997, they are inviting everybody with an interest in participation:
"We will make a network of communication among all our struggles and resistances. An intercontinental network of alternative communications against neoliberalism…(and) for humanity ... This intercontinental network of alternative communication will search to weave the channels so that words may travel all the roads that resist…(it) will be the medium by which distinct resistances communicate with one another ... This intercontinental network of alternative communication is not an organizing structure, nor has a central head or decision maker, nor does it have a central command or hierarchies. Police, Lies, and Video Tape

Over 90% of the people arrested have since be found to have commited no crime. Police video 'evidence' presented in court by the prosecution was proved to have been doctored in at least one case. You can read the transcripts of the Democracy Now! interviews about this story that aired last week or check out the whole show as audio or video.
While the availability of cheap video technology has led to an increase in the amount of video being presented as powerful evidence in court. Police in this country are clearly targetting 'unsympathetic journalists' in an attempt to both stifle any publicity given to protests and avoid public scrutiny of their own actions. In a recent example, a freelance journalist was arrested just minutes after filming an arrest that occured during a protest outside a meeting of G8 environment ministers taking place in London. It was reported afterwards that the police kept the footage and the camera but typically, the charges have since been dropped.
Caminos de Resistencia (Paths of Resistance)

Indymedia Cinema presents a five-day festival of radical and independent film from Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and more. There will also be talks and presentations by Latin American solidarity groups, international activists, and film-makers, as well as Latin American food, drink, and music.
When: The festival takes place from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th February. Programme starts daily at 7pm, and on Saturday there's a doouble session starting at 2pm. All sessions are free but donations are encouraged.

CIPO-RFM to Speak in the UK

Activists from Mexican indigenous direct action group CIPO-RFM will be visiting the UK for the first time on a 5 date speaking tour to promote their struggle against globalisation in Oaxaca.
Admission to all the dates are free and two short films made by activists will also be shown. They hope to raise awareness about the recent increase in state repression being suffered by Mexican activists. There will also be a benefit gig on feb 18th in London.
