OWS Solidarity: Occupy DC storms DC offices of Bloomfield, hits US Conference of Mayors

16-11-2011 16:59 | Occupy Everywhere | Free Spaces | Policing | Social Struggles | World

The sickening November 15 police raid on Occupy Wall Street, complete with videotaped beatings, cries out for payback. Late afternoon the same day, Occupy DC stormed into the Victor Building on 9th st, housing the DC offices of Bloomfield Office properties, "owner" of Zucatti Park the home base of Occupy Wall Street.

Occupy DC's arrival seemed to take Bloomfield by complete surprise, as the door was unlocked, allowing protesters to swarm into the building, reinforced lead banner and all, until no more would fit in the first floor hallway. I do not know if anyone tried to get upstairs or otherwise further into the building to the actual offices of Bloomfield Office Properties.

14-11-2011 19:02 | Other Press | Policing | Repression | World

On September 11th 2001, whilst covering a Greek demonstration, photojournalist Yannis Behrakis experienced a live stun/flash grenade.

Police violence against against demonstrators and the general public has increased dramatically that it's hardly worth reporting.

The stun/flash grenade was launched directly at him, and follow similar attacks on other individuals.

Fortunately Behrakis was unharmed, although his clothes were burnt. Others have not been do fortunate, suffering burns, deafness and other injuries.

Black Bloc: the culture of coercion and poor strategy at mass actions needs an overhaul

08-11-2011 09:14 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Policing | World

As someone who has often defended black bloc tactics since I first encountered it at the Seattle WTO in 1999, I find myself searching for a greater critique, discussion and engagement around strategy and what really is the best approach to contributing to an effective movement that brings significant social, economic, and environmental change to this world. I have come to the conclusion that the typical narrative of the black bloc that has prevailed at mass actions in the U.S. has proven to be counter productive.

Vandalism and the Protesters’ Response at Occupy Oakland (+ PICS)

03-11-2011 10:15 | Occupy Everywhere | Policing | World

Get thousands of people out in protest and you can pretty much guarantee that some of them will cause trouble. This was the case at Occupy Oakland today as some protesters broke the windows of big banks and threw rocks. But, the majority of the protesters seem to have gotten the picture that peaceful protest is the way and have made a point to steer the Occupy Oakland events in the right direction and make sure the acts of a few are not seen as the style of the protest as a whole.

UG#572 - Monopoly and Money (Contradictions of Capitalism)

21-10-2011 14:42 | Globalisation | Policing | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
If competition is such a good thing, why is it not tolerated in areas of government or law? Or in the money system, which functions as a highly profitable private business? And what about cartel agreements which align the interests of multi-national corporations firmly against the interests of consumers? Are corporations really competing to bring better products to market more cheaply, or are they competing for control of government to grant them privileges?

1 protester in Athens dead, pulpit whores blaming the revolutionairies

20-10-2011 16:28 | Policing | Repression | Social Struggles | World

1 'protester' dead of heart stoppage, a syndicalist (PAME-KKE stalinist) builder from Athens. He was guarding the parliament building to try to stop people attacking it! He died of heart failure. No signs of physical injury, unlike many others who attacked and were attacked in attempts to attack, and to defend, the parliament building. Still the stalinist KKE was determined to let the troika vote, and their actions were and will continue to be bloody.

UG#570 - The Fundamental Wrongness of 'Rights' (Law as Fiction)

15-10-2011 09:36 | Analysis | Policing | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
The show this week looks at the ideas of 'law' and 'rights'. As George Carlin says, if the government can take it away, it isn't a right, it's a privilege. A disturbing but important thought in these days in which governments worldwide are becoming more open about their subservience to expediency. We hear from a range of speakers, and our material ranges from the comic to the deadly serious.

more: http://bit.ly/oqXtC0
It remains to be seen whether the internal contradictions within the Occupy movement-the limits of the 99% as a framework understanding for race, class, and police in America will be overcome by its significant contributions to the renewal of revolutionary potentials-its defiance of authority, its willingness to operate outside of dead-ended political channels, and its ability to arouse a sense of possiblity in thousands previously hopeless.

The role of the police in the occupations

Cops at Occupy Seattle
The police may sympathize with us, they might even join us, but we can never forget that it is not the working class man behind the riot shield, but the role he plays when he puts on the uniform and attacks our occupations. Whenever we begin to resist the rich and powerful to a breaking point, the police are called out to defend that system that keeps the rich rich and all of us poor.

Manning Protest at Quantico PHOTO: Ellen Davidson
More and more, in dealing with nonviolent political protesters police across America show up in battlefield dress with intimidating military gear supplied by the Pentagon and Homeland Security. Writer John Hanrahan says reporters, instead of ignoring this ominous development, should ask local, regional and national leaders: Do we need this crap?

The Real Reason Why Police Cage Peaceful Protestors

05-10-2011 18:46 | Analysis | Policing | Public sector cuts | World

On Saturday, the Occupy Wall St. movement marched on the Brooklyn bridge in New York. Police officers cut the demonstrators off from the exits, entrapping them on the bridge, in the rain, before carting off as many as 700 to jail. In the story below, British journalist Dan Hancox writes about how corralling peaceful protestors, or "kettling," was used by Britain's conservative government to steamroll resistance to their drastic austerity agenda. As the Occupy Wall St. movement spreads to cities all over America, we may see much more of this type of policing of public space to quell protests. (AlterNet Editor's note)

700 Arrested on Brooklyn Bridge as Occupy Wall Street Enters Third Week

04-10-2011 08:16 | Occupy Everywhere | Other Press | Policing | Social Struggles | World

Audio protesters in plastic cuffs awaiting transport off the bridge by bus
The "Occupy Wall Street" protests in the financial district took a dramatic turn on Saturday when protesters tried to march across the Brooklyn Bridge. When police arrested 700 of the demonstrators, the event quickly turned into one of the largest arrests of non-violent protesters in recent history. Some protesters claim police lured them onto oncoming traffic on the bridge’s roadway; others said they did not hear instructions from police telling them to use the pedestrian walkway. Meanwhile, similar "Occupation" protests have spread to other cities, including Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles, where hundreds of protesters are now camped out in front of City Hall. We host a roundtable discussion with Marisa Holmes, an organizer with the main organizing group of Occupy Wall Street, called the General Assembly, Marina Sitrin, an attorney who is part of Occupy Wall Street’s legal working group, and Laurie Penny, a writer and journalist who reported on protests in London earlier this summer
